On average, I don't purchase many albums in any given year. But my two favorites this year were Lupe Fiasco's and John Mayer's. Of course, that might change pending Nas' new album...
i didn't really hear much of 2006... Peter, Bjorn & John - Young Folks <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/51V1VMkuyx0"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/51V1VMkuyx0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object> Prototypes - Danse Sur La Merde <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/b4LLDvXrYDY"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/b4LLDvXrYDY" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>
somewhat related topic...does anyone know if a new IPOD is coming out soon, or should I go ahead and get the 30GB one currently available?
my favorite album of the year and my favorite live show of the year juana molina - son i just heard of her this year, but she has been putting out records for almost 10 years. she had a sitcom in argentina in the 90's called "juana and her sisters" and apparently was like the jerry seinfeld of latin america then started doing music. check out this short video - the way she creates music is very unique - a true one (wo)man band. <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/o_3ooACrLQ4"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/o_3ooACrLQ4" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object> giant drag - hearts and unicorns any my bloody valentine fans need to hear this. total ear candy-bliss. oneida - happy new year these guys are all over the place - an amazing live band too. kind of have that velvet underground/sonic youth n.y.c. art-drone-noise aesthetic. almost a greatful dead vibe too (indie rockers dont like to admit it, but there is a very fine-line b/t the dead and s.y.) ooioo - taiga japaneese tribal-noise freakout. yoshimi (from the boredoms and of the flaming lips "yoshimi vs. the pink robots) and 3 other girls doing very experimental noise-pop. this album is very percussive w/ lots of call and response vocals. it is very much like west african poly-rhythms and singing. its weird stuff and most people would probably hate it - if you are into african music at all it might be interesting to hear how 4 japaneese girls interpret it. others... gnarls barkley - st. elsewhere - i can see im not the only here... thom yorke - the eraser nellie mckay - pretty little head beck - the information sonic youth - rather ripped for the first time in a few years there wasnt a rap album that i really got into. nor a good metal album.
Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not by Arctic Monkeys Broken Boy Soldiers by The Raconteurs and the Concert Live Shows Get Lonely by The Mountain Goats Skin & Bone by Foo Fighters
Here's what I liked enough to buy this year: The Dresden Dolls - Yes, Virginia Duncan Sheik - White Limousine The Fray - How to Save a Life Holly Brook - Like Blood Like Honey Gomez - How We Operate The Twilight Singers - Powder Burns Zero 7 - The Garden John Evans - Ramblin Boy Bought but was released in 2005 or earlier: John Mayer Trio - Try! Charlie Sexton - Cruel and Gentle Things Shannon McNally - Geronimo Dahsboard Confessional - A Mark, A Mission, A Brand, A Scar Death Cab for Cutie - Plans James Blunt - Back to Bedlam I didn't buy the Gnarls Barkley, but I liked what I heard. Out of all of those, I can honestly say that none of them hooked me from beginning to end. I like bits and pieces from all of them, but, overall, it was a weak year for music I like.
From the geezer perspective: (in no order) The Beatles - Love The Raconteurs - Broken Boy Soldiers (it was just too short!) Jet - Shine On (not as good as their first one though) Los Lobos - The Town and The Country (America's best band?) Los Lonley Boys - Sacred (more of the very same goodness) David Gilmore - On An Island ( A Floyd fix if a bit lite) Subdues - Behind The Levee (sweet sweet harmonies) Ray Wylie Hubbard - Snake Farm (snakey blues, cool video) <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/GTBfjzI7mFs"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/GTBfjzI7mFs" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object> Eric Burdon - Soul Of A Man (still the best white blues singer alive) <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/4eUEaYLfLxo"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/4eUEaYLfLxo" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object> Ray Davies - Other Peoples Lives (as odd and eccentric as The Kinks) <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/PQf0cd191p0"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/PQf0cd191p0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object> I was somewhat disappointed in JJ/Eric ... it's a JJ Cale album. I was also pumped for the 2006 Indigenous CD Chasing The Sun but Mato Nanji sounds like the tape's dragging.
Ron Sexsmith - All In Good Time <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/PeX4PNxIFiI"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/PeX4PNxIFiI" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>
