I have been interested in getting some stuff by PJ Harvey. Are there any PJ Harvey fans on here? It seemed like every time I got an email from Amazon telling me about new music (specifically for groups like Radiohead and Interpol), I would always be recommended to get something by PJ. Now, I know that PJ Harvey has little in common with Radiohead other than the fact they are both from Britain and are alternative. I also know that PJ has been influenced by Dylan and Tom Waits (2 of my favs), but who are some other artists that are similar to PJ? Don't say Tori Amos because I have already read about that but from what I read and the few songs I have heard on youtube, I am not really seeing the connection there. What are the best albums and/or the ones to start with for a newbie fan?

Also wanted to mention the dream pop groups like My Bloody Valentine, Ride, Lush, etc. Isn't Mazzy Star and Catherine Wheel also in that genre? I know about My Bloody Valentine (have both of their albums - greatest band along with the Stone Roses in groups that only released 2 or fewer albums) - they are supposedly going to release an album of new material as they have been playing together since last year. But I have been waiting in vain for this as well as waiting for the new Massive Attack album and the reunion album for Roxy Music...

At any rate, are there any fans of Ride, Lush, Mazzy Star, and Catherine Wheel here? What are the starter albums to get for these bands? Other thoughts and comments on this are greatly appreciated.

If you like Ride, I imagine you'd have no trouble liking Slowdive. If you like dreampop/shoegaze, you should definitely check them out. Souvlaki would definitely rate in my top five favorite albums, period.

Catherine Wheel "Ferment" It's their first album and IMO their best.

The song 'Black Metallic' is amazing.

    This.

Souvlaki is a fantastic album by a great band. I can't tell you how many times I listened to "Good Day Sunshine". That song kills!

Also, check out Jesus and Mary Chain if you want to know where it all started. Both Psychocandy and Darklands are great.

    Other artist worth checking out:

Swirlies - They Spent Their Wild...
    Swervedriver - Raise

    and anything by Lovesliescrushing.

Catherine Wheel check out Ferment and Chrome
Slowdive- Just for a Day and Souvlaki
The Boo Radleys-Everythings Allright for Ever and Giant Steps
    Chapterhouse -Whirllpool
    Spritualized -Lazer Guide Melodies
Pale Saints-get anything you can find by them!!

Don't call it a comeback, I've been here for years...

Just a little more time to post is all plus I have a computer at home with internet for the first time in years (not that I post much at night but I am able to read other things at home instead of work).

    May I also suggest --

Glifted: "Under and In" Kind of nosier but still has elements of dream pop.

Guitar: "Sunkissed" - Lots of loops and shimmering layers.

Mahogany: "Dream of Modern Day" Gorgeous album.

And yeah Slowdive's "Souvlaki" is essential to any collection. And I would go with "Spooky" by Lush.

Awesome! I was at that show. I'm going to DL those files when I get home. Thanks!

But in all honesty, it wasn't nearly as loud as I thought it was going to be. Only the last 20 minutes or so were really LOUD.

Manny, check out Asobi Seksu - they remind me somewhat of a mix of MBV and Blonde Redhead (another group you might like - at least their more recent recordings). I've been listening to Hush for the past couple of week and really digging it.

I love Hush, even more than the S/T and Citrus albums, I think. Been listening to it a lot lately.

Yep, that's the part I was referring to. MY god that was brutal! I had tickets to the next nite in lil d and sat that one out, I love my ears waaay too much to go through it again.

On PJ Harvey, I really liked Rid of Me when it came out but not so much since then. I did see her at Glastonbury in 95, she was alright.

IMHO, the only PJ Harvey albums worth getting are the first 3 - Dry, Rid of Me, and To Bring You My Love. The first two have a great raw quality and some top notch songs (Dress, She-La-Na-Gig, Rid of Me, 50 Ft Queenie). To Bring You My Love is a cool, album that sounds very much like the mid 90s (the trip hop influence is quite strong) and is much better produced than the first two.

While many disagree with me, I felt she lost her songwriting touch after these albums - the songs on all of her later albums sound forced to me.

I'd recommend the Cocteau Twins. They're definitely a little more pop than the bands mentioned so far, and the vocals are much more prominent, but the guitars are just awesome. Plus, they are arguably the first "dream pop" band. The first album to get would be Treasure.

Dream pop stars with these two bands:

    Cocteau Twins
    Galaxie 500

Mazzy Star came out of the Paisley underground scene. Rain Parade's "Emergency Third Rail Power" is the definitive album for that sub-genre.

I wouldn't call the JaMC & Spiritualized dream pop bands but if you like them I'd recommend Spacemen 3. Spacemen 3 was the former band of the singer from Spiritualized with Sonic Boom who made their sound interesting. The JaMC were obviously influenced by them and you can hear their sound in the post-Psychocandy albums.
