I've been seeing a lot of 20-years-later retrospectives on the music of 1996. For a lot of people my age (mid-30's), this was a formative year for us when we started buying a lot of our own music, listening to music alone and riding or driving in cars bumping tunes. So,Clutchfans, what are some of your top albums or songs from 1996?

    Just kidding...some others

    Beck - Odelay
    Wilco - Being There
Rage Against the Machine - Evil Empire
    Fugees - The Score
    Stereolab - Emperor Tomato Ketchup

but seriously, Pulp - Different Class remains one of the best albums ever

Read a couple AV Club articles recently about 1996 music. This is '96 "Favorite pop culture" in general, but there's some music references
    http://www.avclub.com/article/whats-your-favorite-pop-culture-1996-240300

This explans how "alternative" rock declined and what else emerged. It lists some breakthroughs too. The writer grew up in Texas so that helps make the perspective relatable, seeing things from a SIMILAR place
"In 1996, alternative rock died a messy, forgettable death"

'96 I moved FAR away from home, AWAY from rock & roll markets. My tastes were radio and music video infuenced. There was still some goodies, not as pretentious as today. I didnt mind the females, Jewel, Fiona Apple, Alannis, etc. (But I HATED No Doubt)

To this day I still jam this in my car and throw up sick verses with my mouth while moving my hands like I'm telling a story and it's important. I let people in traffic know 'sup.

My formative years were mid 80s to mid 90s and oh man the 90s were terrible. Terrible music and terrible fashion, everybody started to get angst and depressed. Also 80s cartoons >> 90s cartoons and 80s video games >> 90s video games, etc... And of course 80s Madonna >>>>> 90s Madonna!!!

I thought the mid-90's were fairly blah musically. Alternative went mainstream and pretty much committed suicide. There were a few exceptions though like Weezer (above)

    Phish was awesome then, too.

Here they are playing the entire Remain in Light album for their Halloween cover set.

1996 was also the year Marilyn Manson released "Antichrist Superstar" which was his first REALLY successful album commercially. Tool released "├ćnima" in 1996 as well.
