No anoynymity here, I was the drummer for them. I have many a speia tainted memory of going to the Rice campus and playing w/HK, the singer. Inner Lights is not a tribute but our own thing from the ashes of the John Sparrow, Casino and Coteire. I do have that BotM single and could send it to you if you give me a minute or two, small world eh??
Here is a blog that has old Buddha on the Moon singles and an Lp that has the song you're looking for. I'm not on most of, just the early singles. http://shoegazeralive2.blogspot.com/search/label/Buddah On the Moon
awesome! thanks. everyone should download these! a really under-appreciated band from the early 90's h-town scene. i will shoot you a message about the record.
Small world indeed! I still know some of the Mike Gunn guys; I went to highschool with most of them and was in a band or two with them pre-MG. (They got much, much better once I left musical performance forever. ) Mike Gunn is the name of one of the guys from our high school who was... well... how to describe him? Let's just say he once tried to attend a Mike Gunn (the band) show, but didn't have his ID. He looked very young and they wouldn't let him in. "But I AM Mike Gunn! I AM Mike Gunn!" no dice.
2 more bands that I didn't know if anyone had listened to in: M83 MGMT I keep seeing "Saturdays=Youth" by M83 and "Oracular Spectacular" by MGMT as 2 albums that I might be interested in buying.
I liked TV on the Radio's first 2 albums better than Dear Science, which just sounded more like pop to me while the first two had more of a rock feel. Grizzly Bear is great. Got their new album a couple months ago and I still have it in the cd player.
Brightside, Surely out of all the people here on this BBS, you have both "Oracular Spectacular" by MGMT and "Saturdays=Youth" by M83. Hit a brother up with comments and tidbits about those 2 albums.
wasnt a huge fan till dear science came out - i liked their albums, but i wasnt going out of my way to listen. after dear science ive gone back to the others and i am a convert. i tried a couple times - they arent bad, but i dont get the hype.
Manny, surely you've heard some of MGMT's songs. "Time to Pretend" was the song of the year in 2008 and received a decent amount of radio play. Also, "Electric Feel" and "Kids" were two other fairly popular songs by them. As for the album as a whole, the second half of it kind of bored me. I'd suggest listening to the songs I mentioned and if you're not wowed, then you probably won't like the album. It's a more accessible brand of psychedelic pop, and I'm using the word "psychedelic" pretty liberally. As for M83, I only have two of their albums, "Dead Cities..." and "Saturdays.." Both are kind of a blend of shoe-gaze and dream pop with keyboards instead of guitars. Although, Dead Cities is more proper shoe-gaze with a lot of the songs lacking vocals and more noisy, where as Saturdays=Youth is more 80s dream pop with more typical song structures and vocals. I would actually probably start with "Dead Cities" because it's a little more challenging and I just have a hunch you'd like it more than the more accessible Saturdays=Youth. Both are worth having imo. I'd be interested in hearing about their second album if anyone can add anything.
Yes sir. I adore both bands, and have actually seen both of them live in the past year. I saw M83 in Webster Hall in NYC and it was an amazing concert , almost like a religious experience. Their latest album is their best to date. Check out the track "Couleurs" from the new album. Might be one of my all time favorite tracks ever. I like MGMT as well. They have obtained alot of commercial and mainstream success in the past two years. They are one of the indie bands that are still considered underground, but most people seem to know about them. (Probably because they play their music at Pac Sun. ) I once saw Kirsten Dunst at a concert of theirs since she is going out with one of the band members. Their success is somewhat strange, in that I remember seeing them play in front of 150 people, and now they play in front of thousands. Alot of their music tends to appeal to the stoner/collegiate crowd from what I've seen. I still like em though.
Brightside, I knew you would come through for me! You never let me down when it comes to indie music. Once upon a time, the Gods of indie music that posted here were 2 posters named Palmray and rudager, but sadly I have not seen posts from either one in years. They probably moved on with their lives and the BBS wasn't as important to them anymore - that or they got jobs writing for Pitchfork. Or you might be one of them reincarnated, Brightside! Seriously, you and DC along with Landlord are the experts when it comes to indie music although Landlord is more of what I would call a "post-rock" guru.
