maybe Lupe should have taken a page from Tool's book and made it simple yet powerful.

    Not lupe's best at all

but for all of you guys who are complaining about his message, get over it.

at least thought goes into it. i don't even agree with most the crap he raps about, i mean hell i'm not muslim... but i respect that he doesn't conform to the other degenerates on the radio... a lot of his songs are thought provoking..

his intellect and rhyme schemes makes lil wayne look like carlton banks.

Except he's been doing this his entire career.

And ever since when has music been about solving problems? You are like the 3rd person in this thread that says "What problems does he solve?" are we really looking for musicians to solve problems now?

When you start whining about things in one word verses and criticize people, without giving solutions, you come off as unintelligent no matter what medium you convey the complaining through.

Again why are you expecting solutions from him? Why are you expecting solutions in this song?

Ever since when was there a rule that if you wanted to rap or sing about a problem you had to have valid solutions to said problem.

He sounds ignorant and unintelligent. The music sucks.

I am expecting good content from a supposed "genius".

Lol @ all the people wanting him to identify problems AND come up with solutions in a 4 minute track. Many of you bemoan all the materialism and misogyny in hip hop, but when someone like Lupe or Immortal Technique have socially conscious and politically aware lyrics, you trash them. Can't win either way with you guys...haters are gonna hate, but Lupe is gonna keep doing his thing.

I'm not expecting anything from Lupe Fiasco. You obviously didn't read when I said it doesn't matter the medium, whether it be music, print, yodeling, grafitti, smoke signal, what he is saying is stupid and pretentious to get noticed.

If I started typing "George Bush is stupid," "911 was an inside job," "Barack Obama is a terrorist," "Our school system is underfunded," etc, would you think I'm intelligent if I didn't justify why I was saying those things?

How is he doing it to get noticed when rapping about issues has been his thing since he's entered the business and yet...still isn't popular as other guys not rapping about that stuff? When it comes to hip hop as this thread displays, people only want to hear about lyrics about money and women.

So again how can he be doing this to get noticed when this has been his thing from the start?

From his first album, so again I doubt he's doing this to get 'noticed'

Yes in a conversation, but this is not a conversation. It's a song. A piece of art can also simply POINT out problems although the artist may not have solutions to said problems.

    this. this. this.

a young artist saying he's so hip that he didn't even vote for Obama. he knows so much about the system that he is above it.

and finally, he parrots any conspiracy theory into one song.

if he's not the problem, does he think he is part of the solution?

I've heard he is an amazing artist. of course I listened to the whole song before making my judgment.

Point is, the song is a single.

It HAD to be 'dumbed down' a little. Did no one realize that he couldn't release his album for over a year because Atlantic wanted him to do strictly what they were telling him to write about?

They reached a compromise, and this single is one of the compromise songs. I'm sure the rest of the album will include more of the Lupe we have come to love, filled with complex metaphors inside metaphors inside metaphors.

And another thing, this song makes people think. Isn't that a good thing? Don't knock his intelligence just because what he says goes against what you've been taught. The emotionally charged criticisms are probably because of record label demands. Think about it.

These days people see the world and they know something is ****ed up, but they don't know what. Record label realizes this and tells Lupe to make the song as blunt as possible. Makes people think & $$$$$$$$$$ for the label. = Thought/emotion/trend control & money made.
