Pink Floyd is #1 on my all time list. Has anyone bought the 5.1 Dolby version of Dark Side of the Moon???
Alan Parsons rockHead if you don't know Alan Parsons, check out an album called "Pyramid". The Alan Parsons' Project. Had some great albums. And you'd be amazed at the other people he has produced.
I hate to bring up an old thread, but I have spent the last couple of days listening to my Pink Floyd CDs in their entirety: "Dark Side of the Moon" "Wish You Were Here" "Animals" "The Wall" I also have "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn", but I have only listened to it twice - very different from the PF that I have gotten to know. I noticed that rH mentioned "The Final Cut". In reading some reviews, I got the impression that it was one of the worst PF CDs ever. I recently purchased a "Pink Fraud" CD (what some people like to call them) in "A Momentary Lapse of Reason". I got it because I want to own all the PF albums one day plus for some reason that album has become a "special order" CD on Amazon. Also, "Learning to Fly" is a great song, worth the CD's price alone. At any rate, I would be curious to hear from coma, red, rH, and other PF fans what they feel about on the split between Waters and Gilmour. I, personally, love Gilmour and feel that Waters is an egomaniac. Don't get me wrong - he was essential to the band and their success and they will never be the same without him, but I think that they are still a great band without him. Also, what is your ranking of the 5 best PF albums of all-time? My rankings are as follows (consists of only those that I have listened to all the way): 1) "Wish You Were Here" 2) "Dark Side of the Moon" 3) "Animals" 4) "The Wall" 5) "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn"
has anyone listened to pink floyd(i think it's "dark side of the moon", but i might be wrong) while watching wizard of oz? ive never done it, but i heard it runs perfectly in sync and terrifies stoners everywhere.
I've only listened to four of them, and I'm not very knowledgeable on the band, but here goes : 1. Wish You Were Here - Just one hell of a rock album. It's as experimental as the others, and I think that may be why I like it. "Wish You Were Here" is one of my favorite songs ever. 2. Dark Side of the Moon - Again, more mainstream, but it has some classics in "Time" and "Money." 3. The Wall - Initially, I didn't like it all, and I considered it a huge letdown after Wish You Were Here(I am probably one of few who actually bought Wish You Were Here first), but it has grown on me. One thing that I don't like so much about PF is that I can't relate to many of the lyrics. However, the more I listen to The Wall, the more I like it. 4. Animals - Eh, haven't really listened to it much. Seems solid, but I really doubt if it will supplant WYWH or DSOTM. On your other question...no idea. I do feel that both were masters of their instruments, though. Waters, however, seemed to have been the driving force behing one of my favorite albums of all time, so I would have to side with him...
If your a Pink Floyd fan I highly reccomend David Gilmour's Live in Concert DVD. Its a mix of him performing old and new Floyd stuff plus a few other random songs.
If any of you Houstonians get a chance, I recommend checking out the Pink Floyd laser light show at the planetarium.
I dont have anything against post-Waters Pink Floyd, and wouldn't go as far as calling them Pink Fraud. If you listen to any pre-split Gilmour-written tracks on earlier Floyd albums, they sound very similiar to the stuff off MLOR. I think there are several gems on that album. Growing up in the 70s/80s, Floyd was always one of my fave bands. I remember when The Wall came out and I had to sneak in to see it, I was so confused, and the theater was so smoky (considering it was non-smoking)..... Then they used to show The Wall on Saturday nights in the 80s at this giant cinema that is now that r****d meatmarket bar City Streets on Richmond....that was fun, people were wrecked, a good time. Anyway, my favorite 5 Floyd albums: 1. Wish You Were Here 2. Dark Side of the Moon 3. Meddle ("Echoes" is my favorite all-time Floyd track) 4. Piper at the Gates of Dawn 5a. The Wall 5b. Animals I think the Final Cut is a nice addendum to The Wall, its just a little hard to listen to. Obscured by Clouds is a pretty good album, too... I don't like The Whatever Bell, that last album....bleah. I have this random album called "Rock Goes To The Movies 1" which has three random songs from Zambiskie Point, some old hippie movie which has an acid-induced 100 person orgy hallucination in the desert scene (thats all I can remember from when I saw it at Vandy)...anyway, there is a track called "Come In Number 51, Your Time's Up" which is a better version of "Be Careful With That Axe Eugene" from UmmaGumma. Also two other tracks, one called "Crumbling Land" and another called "Heart Beat Pig Meat"....anyway, nice rare Floyd tracks. I think that the Foo Fighters do a ridiculously awesome version of "Have A Cigar" on the MI2 soundtrack....stupid movie, bad soundtrack, thank god for Kaaza.
==================== link to google search for DSOTM and oz ==================== supposedly you can also sync up Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory and Rush's 2112 - link here ==================== the split? it's just too bad some people can't work together. to each their own. ==================== as far as Pink Floyd top 5's... mine would go like this 1. DSOTM 2. WYWH 3. The Wall 4. Meddle 5. Animals 6. Obscured by Clouds ==================== also for the DG fans... the first David Gilmour solo CD (self titled) - amazon link - is worth picking up, IMO. ==================== The best Pink Floyd Discography online - be sure to check out the trivia tab on each disc page!
If you like Pink Floyd, I recommend picking up Pulse, which is a double CD live recording with fancy packaging (ie: a blinking light). There is some great stuff on that. Also, the Division Bell CD is underrated.
I feel like Waters was the ego-maniac as well. I never bought "Final Cut" Top 5 WYWH DSOTM Piper At The Gates Of Dawn The Wall Meddle/Obscured by Clouds I bought the DVD Director's Cut of "Live At Pompeii" since I posted that link awhile back. Its good, but is contains nothing really more than the original. I'm glad I have it on DVD instead of VHS now though. Mateo - you should really see "LAP" if you like "Echoes". Part I opens the movie and Part II closes it. It also has a really good version of "Careful With That Axe Eugene".
Yeah I used to watch that movie in college a lot, my girlfriend used to piss me off by asking "You watching Spinal Tap again?" when she came in. Looking forward to buying the DVD, however, since my VCR copy got destroyed in a tragic kegstanding accident 12 years ago. Because of this thread I threw Obscured by Clouds in the car for a spin on the way to work. I dig that album. Terrible movie, btw.
for me. its all about Animals and Meddle. "Echoes" reminds me of Samuel T. Coleridge's "Rime of the Ancient Mariner": "overhead the albatross hangs motionless upon the air, and deep beneath the rolling waves in labyrinths of coral caves, the echo of a distant time comes willowing across the sand and everything is green and sub marine."
While working out today, I listened to "Animals" in its entirety. "Dogs" may be my favorite Pink Floyd song of all-time. Gilmour plays like a God (he does that on the entire album) and Waters' singing is actually tolerable! So many other PF albums get recognition like "The Wall" or "Dark Side of the Moon" or even "Meddle" and "Wish You Were Here", but "Animals" is the most underrated PF CD of all-time.
"You gotta be crazy, you gotta have a real need. You gotta sleep on your toes, and when you're on the street, you gotta be able to pick out the easy meat with your eyes closed. And then moving in silently, down wind and out of sight, you gotta strike when the moment is right, without thinking..." Animals is the ish
