No, no they did not. I'd have soiled my Huggies right then and there if not for the recent unpleasantries.
I caught the last 5 minutes after the Flips. They came on extremely late. Wish I saw more. Mobile DJ guy was awesome too.
Wow. So we came out early in the day, I saw part of Buxton and listened to Black Congress and Grandfather Child from far away. Buxton was alright, and neither Black Congress or Grandfather Child were really my type of music. I didn't pay them a ton of attention though. Heard part of Lymbyc System, they seemed alright, but didn't catch all of it. Hung out a little more, left around 3 to chill out and do a few things, then it started raining. We waited until it slowed down a bit until we went back in. Went back, I went into the pit in front of the stage about halfway through the Stars set. Stars sounded great. I only have one album (Set Yourself on Fire) but they played my favorites from that album so I was happy (I knew they had a lot more stuff so I was kind of worried they wouldnt). Then on to Slim Thug and Bun B. I'm not a rap guy at all and was mostly here so me and my friend could eventually get a good spot for the Flaming Lips (I'm a huge Lips fan). They weren't that bad though and I had a bit of fun, but again not my style. By the time the Lips started I was already pretty tired from standing there for a long time. By now I had a great spot though, like 4 rows back from the stage, to the side a bit, though by about halfway through the Lips set I had been pushed to the very center. I seemed to forget how tired and thirsty I was (I didn't prepare well, my first festival and first time GA at a concert) when Wayne got into the ball, and I was only a few inches from touching it (D. The beginning of the set was insane. I've never been pushed around so much. For a little bit it was even more packed in then Girl Talk, though later on things mellowed out and wasn't as crazy, which was good because I didn't know how much more of that I could take. "She Don't Use Jelly" and the "Yeah Yeah Yeah Song" were both awesome. About halfway through the set the standing and pushing was really starting to take its toll though. I was exhausted, drenched in sweat, nearly dehydrated, and nearly overheated. I probably would have enjoyed it a lot more if I wasn't, kind of messed up there. But I kept enjoying it, singing to "Yoshimi" and having a fun time with "The W.A.N.D." When they played "Do You Realize" though, I seemed to forget everything. That whole moment, when you hear the countdown, the music starts and the confetti pops everywhere, and then everyone sings, that was one of the most amazing moments I've ever had. Words can't describe how it felt. Left extremely exhausted, but damn, it was a ton of fun. Buying tickets for next year as soon as they go on sale. Don't even care who they have next year (Though considering how many people were there, I think we'll start getting even more good national bands), I think I'd have a great time anyway.
Had a lot of fun this weekend. Just enough. It was great getting to hang out with LSD and AkeemTheDreem86, you guys are very cool. I must say, they did pretty well this year with the festival. I don't even care who's playing next year, I'll be first in line for tickets. We came in yesterday during the torrential downpour, but it never took away from the enjoyment. In fact, it really cooled things down for the last few acts. The Flaming Lips were surreal. The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song was a highlight for me, as was of course the grand finale with Do You Realize. The whole weekend was a trip. Hope to see everyone there next year!
Girl Talk rips everything off, but that is part of what makes his sets fun, because the songs are familiar and of a party atmosphere. As for The Flaming Lips, I still don't get the hype. They're playing ACL this year and I am not planning
Does not compute. Seeing the Flaming Lips live is an experience like no other. It's not a show, it's an event. A giant, glittery, balloon riddled party. It's amazing. All those smiling faces are contagious. It makes it damn near impossible to walk out without a smile on your face. There's something magical about sharing something like that with all your friends. If you haven't seen them live, give it a shot. If you have and you still don't get the "hype", then you're probably a robot. Either way, here are some cool shots: http://blogs.houstonpress.com/rocks/2010/06/post_20.php
I hate the Flaming Lips new album, and they played way too many of them. Just so many overly-distorted psychadelic jam songs. The lights and confetti and everything are cool, but most the show was just loud noises. I saw them at ACL in 2006, and they were awesome.
Yeah, too much Embryonic and not enough Soft Bulletin. But still had a fun time. Embryonic isnt that bad, and theres a few really good ones on it, but overall I dont think its as good for live shows.
Actually, Embryonic received a 9.0 from Pitchfork, by far their highest rating for any Flaming Lips album. So I was glad to hear something that appeased the staunch indie gods.
What did everybody think of Bun B? I was glad he and Slim Thug didn't do more than one song together; Bun's talent is much higher than Slim. It looked like they were having a pretty good time while performing, even though it wasn't their typical atmosphere. Loved Bun's line of "Get ready for the bubble, y'all," before the Flaming Lips. Had a friend that met up with Bun B at the snow cone stand after his set and took some pictures with him. I was supremely jealous of her.
I enjoyed it thoroughly. You could tell that Bun B was definitely out of his element but he just rolled it with. Loved that he grabbed that water gun and shot it straight up in the air. Homeboy got himself wet. Good times.
They gave the Soft Bulletin, their best album IMO, a 10. So thats the highest rated. I like Embryonic, I just don't think some of the songs work as well live (I liked Worm Mountain and Convinced of the Hex a lot, and I Can Be a Frog was entertaining, but the other ones? Not so much)
Dood thanks! Yeah I thought when I got there that certainly that wasn't where we were gonna play. One of my friends goes "look at the baby stage!" then found ou that's where I play...rats
OK, I can understand that being the hype. Perhaps it's just the music that doesn't do much for me. I'll give them a chance through.
I'm not as familiar with Embryonic, but the arrangement on both the Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi are just awesome. One thing I really liked was that unlike a lot of "symphonic" type bands, the Lips were able to convey their music with a minimum of backing tracks. Instead, they rearranged the music to fit the lineup they had, and it was really good. And Steven Drozd is just amazing - you really appreciate his talent and sense of composition when you see all the things he does live.
I'm not a rap fan at all, though I tried to have fun with it. I liked Bun better than Slim Thug. But I didn't care too much for either honestly. Maybe if I was more into rap, and actually knew the songs like the people around me. Who was the other guy with them, doing extra vocals?
