I love trios because they are bands that have no filler members like lead singers, rhythm guitarists, or keyboardists. When you just have 1 guitar, a bass, and drums, you can't hide when you play live. I've always respected a good trio more than a 4 or 5 piece.
Unless you use backing tracks, like ZZ Top did when I saw them play the last show at the Compaq three years ago.
Dead Moon If you have never heard this band, check them out. they rock!!!!!! This is the real deal. It doesn't get more rock and roll than this. http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/venue/7980/
a keyboardist is 'filler' material..? are you.. one of those musicians that consider the piano to be a 'gay instrument'?
Agree to a certain extent - there are some keyboardists though that is definitely not true with - mainly Keith Emerson, Ray Manzarek, Jon Lord, Rick Wakeman, and Rick Wright.
No, I don't think the piano is a gay instrument. I actually just inherited a piano and I've been practicing 2 hours a day just trying to get my reading skills back up to where they used to be. All I'm saying is the less instruments you have, the more exposed you are. That's why I like trio's that can sound good live without backing tracks or hidden musicians. I've seen Ben Folds Five numerous times and they sound just like they do on their records if not better. It sounds like there are 6 people playing and singing, but it's just the 3 of them. Oh yeah, one of them is a piano player.
I was at that show too. Didn't they have a country western act for their opener? Don't remember the guys name, but by the end of his act, he had actually won over the BFF crowd.
Yeah, Robbie Fulks. BFF tore up "One Angry Dwarf" that night. That piano took so much abuse, it was great. EDIT: Review of the show 2 nights after we saw him.
