gave all the previously mentioned artists a listen tonight. cant say that I care for Fugazi so much.....but sht if Pavement isn't some great stuff. I really, really hate folk indie......but I did truly miss out on Peter Broderick. He is a fantastic indie homo. still working on Sonic Youth. how the *** are you not a fan of This Will Destroy You yet? if this doesnt get you all soggy in the drawls....ugh......TWDY might be an excellent gaping hole artist you need to explore......... It's become a rarity to see artists get into their sets like this....If you like Sigur Ros, Mogwai, GY!BE and EITS you should def give TWDY a spin....then go after Stubborn Tiny lights.
Not too much got past me in the 90s. After hearing Brighten the Corners for the first time (if I hadn't been watching 120 minutes on MTV at the moment Matt Pinfield played the video for "Stereo" my life may have turned out different) I pretty much went back and searched for any indie rock I could find back to 80s Pixies, Sonic Youth, and pretty much the entire Matador catalog of the time...thanks to the Internet. I use to visit the Fake Matador Message Board where I ended up hearing about most of these bands and perusing old critics' lists at http://rocklist.net/. Still, some groups that I recently found that I liked from the 90s are Red Red Meat, Sunny Day Real Estate, and Ride. As for genres I completely missed the whole "Daisy Age" of rap with De la Soul, Pharcyde, Black Sheep, Tribe, etc...and it is by far my favorite style of rap. Didn't really get into De la Soul or Tribe until around 2000 and didn't get into the Pharcyde until last year. In fact, I guess I pretty much didn't get into rap as a whole until around 2000. I never liked "Gangster Rap" that was popular in my formative years and still don't (Dr. Dre, Snoop, 2Pac, B.I.G.).
Yes, Bossanova! Repped. When I was in high school (in the 80's), me and my friends were always pretty far ahead of the musical curve. We were listening to RHCP, U2, REM, etc. before anyone else had picked up on them. I remember seeing RHCP at the Sam Houston Coliseum with about 100 other people. Anyway, one band that all the cool kids were into was The Smiths. That's a band I never got into and never understood why anyone else would. Morrisey's voice was just way too feminine sounding for me. Still is.
I really enjoy Sufjan Stevens. But Nick Cave, I could do without... something about his style just bothers me. Sort of feels "lounge-act" to me.
This thread makes me feel older than when I try to decipher my daughter's texts. Anyway, I had a friend that went to the University of GA and he kept telling us about this band that played the clubs there. He was never a music freak, but he would try and see them whenever he could. It became his mission to proselytize for this band and he turned us on to REM before they released their first American album. I guess my gaping hole would be anything post 1995, but I have no desire to actively work or spend money to try and plug it. If something catches my attention, I might investigate it, but I'm not keeping up with the scene these days.
I don't think I can name you two Beatles tracks even if my life depended on it. Same with Sonic Youth and Animal Collective.
After hearing that I don't know if there is anything that would ever get me into Fugazi. That said, Radiohead is a band that took me ages to "get". Now I'm just crossing my fingers they wind up headlining the ACL lineup every year.
Understandable on Animal Collective. And I'm in the same boat with Sonic Youth. But The Beatles is something you're gonna have to remedy asap.
For me it's my fave Pixies lp, love the track where he spells out Surfer with the first letter in each lyric!
Sonic Youth is awesome. Mostly their older stuff though. Brightside - No Beatles? Thats ridiculous. We're talking about 2 of the greatest song writers who ever lived, as well as George Harrison's guitar... and that Ringo guy sang a song about Octopuses Gardens. The Smiths just screams sexual ambiguity. Morrissey is pretty legit though, can't front.
My favorite Beatles song. When I was in HS, Joy Division was a band I never got into except one song and other then that I though they were over-rated.
