I, personally, am not a musician. I do sing in a choir at church and every year at Christmas in a local community choir, but I have not played an instrument in 16 years. However, 3Fingeredgus was asking in a thread that he started about electronic music off your home computer. I would check into that thread and maybe ask him if he knows anyone.
As a bass player, I've always been into motown and jazz... recently I've become more interested in African, Middle-Eastern, and Latin sounds, too. For anyone interested in modern jazz (I guess I mean recent stuff) with African influences-- pick up a copy of Randy Weston's cd Saga ... He used to study under Monk... then traveled around Africa (particularly Morocco) in the 60's and 70's. He's got a great sound. The bass player (Alex Blake) is so good, it is just absurd... For anyone who was ever blown away with the kinds of things that Les Claypool has done on electric bass, you have to check out what Blake does on the upright. Since I first heard this album a few years ago, I haven't looked at the instrument in the same way...
An artist that I have recently gotten into is Richard James aka Aphex Twin. This guy along with Trent Reznor may be the two greatest musical geniuses out there today. Why am I telling you this? Because I'm promoting his new CD which will be actually a double CD entitled, "Drukqs", and will be available 15 days from now, October 23. I have 4 of his CDs: Selected Ambient Works 85-92, Selected Ambient Works, Volume II, I Care Because You Do, and Richard D. James Album. The order I got these in were RDJA, ICBYD, SAW85-92, and SAW,VII. Volume II contains some of the scariest, melancholic, and beautiful sounds that I have ever heard. If you are willing to be open-minded and you are tired of the same old formulaic crap on the radio, give Richard James a try. I would recommend getting Richard D. James Album first...if you like that one, then get more of his earlier stuff.
