David Bowie's "Pin-Ups" was one of the first modern rock covers records. I really love his versions of "Sorrow" (by an obscure 60's band called The Merseys) and "It's Hard to be a Saint in the City" by a young Bruce Springsteen. Bowie's version of "See Emily Play" by Pink Floyd is pretty great, too. Other favorite cover versions: "You Really Got a Hold on Me" by the Beatles (Smokey Robinson and the Miracles) "Death Letter" by the White Stripes (Son House) "Delia" by Bob Dylan (traditional folk song) "In the Pines" Nirvana (Leadbelly) "Neon Lights" U2 (Kraftwek) "Sattelite of Love" U2 (Lou Reed) "Hot Burrito (I'm Your Toy) #1" Elvis Costello (Gram Parsons) "Comfortably Numb" Scissor Sisters (Pink Floyd) The Pulp song covered by William Shatner was "Common People." That is a good one, but I'll go with his version of "Mr. Tambourine Man" trippy, man.
Thanks, BMoney I could not agree with you more about 'Pinups'. For me only Alaidin Sane is a better Bowie release, and it's all covers. I thought Sorrow was a Pretty Things song. It hardly matters though; the whole lp is a lesson in great rock-n-roll. Ronson really goes off as well.
I love covers. I always like listening to how groups interpret someone else's music, especially if it's really well known. Props to A-Train for the Dynamite Hack reference. I also thought of: Gin and Juice - The Gourds (already mentioned a few times I see) Ring of Fire - Social Distortion Abracadabra - Sugar Ray (guilty pleasure of mine) Baker Street - Foo Fighters Jessie's Girl - Frickin' A Mrs. Robinson - The Lemonheads Numerous versions of "The Devil Went Down to Georiga". Try Primus' version. Even the Rednex do a couple pretty good versions. Reel Big Fish (ska/rock) do quite a few good covers, including Hungry Like the Wolf, Take On Me, and a pretty good acapella version of New York, New York.
As in "Black Steel In The Hour of Chaos?" Wild Thing - Hendrix (The Troggs) Bullet To Blue Sky - P.O.D. (U2) Sunday Bloody Sunday - Pillar (U2) Smooth Criminal - Alien Antfarm (Mike Jackson) Some of the best covers (IMO) cross genre's and styles too... perhaps even sound totally different.
The Doors- Gloria Nirvana- Man who Sold the World The Byrds- Mr. Tambourine man Janis Joplin- Little Girl Blue
Viva Las Vegas, during the closing credits of The Big Lebowski. I can't remember the chick's name that does it, but for some reason it's not on the soundtrack or on iTunes. (yes, I've done a search) It's sexy, done as a blues tune, and fabulous!
Lots of great ones already but...Madonna? Alien Ant Farm? Uhh...hope ya'll posted those in the wrong thread accidently. Across the Universe-Fionna Apple (Beatles)
