I mentioned "Mark of the Mole" in my earlier post. I still think it's their most accessible album from that earlier era.

There's another Houston band that I failed to mention...

    Three Day Stubble

    Good luck.

Animal Collective would fit into this genre. I like some of their albums, but I saw them live recently in Austin and it was pretty underwhelming. This is a good song for the hot ass weather we currently have. :)

Yea, I caught them at Bonnaroo while I was working. I wasn't that impressed with them, either although I could tell that they have some potential. To me, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs were the best band I heard that day outside of The Beastie Boys (of course).

Yes, and unfortunately I was disappointed in the show that Trent gave. My brother-in-law and me left before his set was over. Sorry, man. :(

Damn, that sucks. I know this time around he stripped it down to a 4 piece group so I was curious how that was going to come across. Not good I guess.

Honestly I think he lip synched the first half of the show!

Also, never heard "Closer" (which he might have sung as his last song so he could have done it since I left before it was over) and his sound system and acoustics were awful. If he had been on the main stage like Wilco and Springsteen, I think he would have been a lot better.

Menomena is one of my favorite experimental indie rock bands out there.

Others bands I consider experimentals include:

    Yeasayer
    Grizzly Bear
    Animal Collective
    Caribou
    Most Serene Republic
    Dirty Projectors

wow, I may have to see that austin show.

Somehow I missed this thread, but I'm a huge Zappa fan, and really like the Residents as well.

"Commercial Album" by the residents is quite interesting, as all of the songs are about 1 minute long (30 or so songs on the album) and have no repetition of verses or chorus. The idea was to remove the redundancy/excess from the songs and reduce them to their essence without exploiting them through repetition and traditional structure. The liner notes tell you to play each tune three times to make a pop song of them. Some are really good, some are not, but the album has some really interesting stuff on it.

"Third Reich and Roll" is also very interesting... they took a bunch of 60's or classic tunes, spliced and dubbed it all to hell and back, then added new vocals and instruments on top.... then took the original tracks out. weird, wild stuff.

"Cruisin' With Reuben and the Jets" is another really good Zappa album, and somewhat Residents-esque in that it is presented as though the band is someone else, and the whole thing is like retro 50s style music with Zappa twist. GREAT stuff. Some great songs on there like "Any way the wind blows," "I'm not satisfied," " Anything" is especially fantastic.

The performance in Austin last night was fantastic. The venue was horrible. If you're into multi-media performance art, you need to see this. The Granada in Dallas tonight should be great.

Man I'm totally late to these threads.

Negativland love em. Weird story, One of my best friends girlfriend of ten years left him for a member of the band. I believe they live somewhere in North Carolina.

Bruce Haack pretty cool maybe start with "electric lucifer"

Coil- Anything by them is pure gold in my book

Cabaret Voltaire like almost everything but just on feel I like "Colours"

Can- Love "Horror trip in the Paperhouse"

I could go on all day

Hopefully you saw the last show in Houston. Visually the best show I have ever seen. I was pretty much done with NIN till a friend dragged me to that show and I was floored

Yea, I have already gotten it. I also have "Safe as Milk" and "Lick My Decals Off, Baby". I plan on trying to get every one of his studio albums which by my count is 9 more.

speaking of avant garde, I adore this 'band'. although I only personally know a handful of people who dig them. The people I do know who understand them are almost like a cult following. It is pretty challenging to wrap your arms around, but if you get it, then you get it. Every time I hear them I swear I find a new texture or layer....yea, they are that deep. anyway....

if you do listen, I pray that you have high def speakers.

personally speaking, I think Belong is absolutely one of the greatest artists I have ever heard. If I had to guess what music would sound like 25 years from now, this would be my guess.
