I forgot to mention that Steve Vai used to play in Zappa's band and transcribe his music, so that probably counts.

If you want weirdo music, don't forget about Houston's own Jandek.

John Zorn has done some really cool and unusual stuff as well - check out Spillane.

The best late era Coltrane album is Interstellar Space. Drums and saxophone - that's it.

No. Thinly veiled pop. Not to say I don't like it. But her videos are more innovative than her music, by far.

The fact that she hyperventilates is not particularly avant garde, IMO.

What would be the first Residents album you would recommend to someone who doesn't own anything by them? You don't have "Trout Mask Replica" by Captain Beefheart, do you?

I used to have that CD but I gave up on it after listening to it 3 times. I should probably try it again.

Manny, I am an unabashed FZ worshipper and love everything he did, including insane people talking from inside a piano. He was one of the penultimate satirists of the last 25 years and never fails to bring a smile to my face.

I preferred his rocking teen ensembles to the later orchestral works on the synclavier but he may be remembered more in history for his orchestral stuff when all is said and done.

Trance-Fusion is an instrumental release that will move FZ up your list of all-time guitarists. Play it LOUD.

Shut Up n Play Yer Guitar (all instrumental) series will do the same

Halloween on DVD Audio surround sound is a great live set. Play it on 11.

Roxy & Elsewhere is a great live set.

Joe's Garage I, II, & II are underrated classics.

You Are What You Is is another underrated satirical gem with incredibly dense multi-rhythms and screaming guitar sometimes buried in the mixes.

FZ's production of An Evening with Wildman Fischer is a must-have for bizarre music that comes straight from the soul of a truly demented man.

With Captain Beefheart you have to start with Trout Mask Replica and marvel at the precision with which the cacophony was played. His Live in London album is pretty bluesy.

Edit: to answer your question, We're Only in it for the Money was his answer to Sgt. Pepper. Check out the cover artwork.

Hahaha! I actually saw Ramon Medina (guitarist for LP4) a few weeks back.

Nice guy. Wrote a review (nice review at that) for my old band's EP thing we did.

I’m surprised noone has mentioned Frank Zappa Meets the Mothers of Prevention

    From wiki

The album's title is a reference to the lobby group, the PMRC, who were campaigning to require record companies to put warning stickers on albums they considered offensive, and to Zappa's former band, The Mothers of Invention. The original US version of the album contains the track, "p*rn Wars" — a sound collage featuring excerpts from PMRC hearings. This track was omitted from non-US versions, and replaced with three other pieces: "I Don't Even Care", co-written by Zappa and Johnny "Guitar" Watson, and two instrumental tracks — "One Man, One Vote" (a Synclavier composition) and "H.R. 2911," which collates some of the backing music "p*rn Wars", without the PMRC hearing excerpts and other dialogue.

Very nice. We probably know a few of the same people. LP4 has my old Moog keyboard, which I never should have sold. :) I should have just loaned that beautiful beast.

Updating this a little bit - another great experimental, out there music was some of the stuff Herbie Hancock was doing right before "Headhunters". The last 2 albums he did for Warner Bros in "Mwandishi" and "Crossings" along with his Columbia debut, "Sextant" is out there - sounds almost like alien music. If you are a jazz purist, you will probably hate these albums but if you like free jazz, electronic music, and ambient music aka Brian Eno then you have to listen to these albums especially "Crossings" and "Sextant". Absolutely brilliant but does take some patience to listen to!

Also, I am extremely fortunate that a lady I work with brought in a huge collection of CDs from a good friend of hers. To say that this friend has an eclectic collection would be the understatement of the century! There were all kinds of things there including a best of Liberace  , Medeski, Martin, and Wood as well as "20 Jazz Funk Greats" by Throbbing Gristle   and 2 CDs by Tom Waits that I did not have in "Bone Machine" and "Nighthawks at a Diner". There was also stuff by The Flying Burrito Brothers, Devendra Banhart, Iron & Wine, Surfjan Stevens, Ornette Coleman, and even Lee "Scratch" Perry!

But the crown jewel (besides the 2 Waits albums) was a double CD greatest hits compilation of the good captain, Captain Beefheart!! :D :D :D

I know what I will be listening to for the next couple of days!

Yeah EITS defines post-rock. Not much experimental about them.

My favorite avant-garde band is maudlin of the Well.. this is actually one of their more straightforward songs:

Their new album is free to download at their site.

I also like dubstep, but then again I mostly listen to drum & bass so it's not a far leap.

I think there's a chance we may hear US hip-hop turn out dubstep influenced tunes in the near future. Snoop Dogg already did a bootleg track a few months ago.
