I used to love Korn when I was a teenager. I think I had one Deftones album too, but eventually traded it in during college...probably for something like Belle and Sebastian when I grew out of my "metal phase." So yeah, I choose Belle and Sebastian.
I've seen Korn 3 times, but the first time I was them was back in 1998 or so on the first Family Values tour. The whole show was amazing (with Limp Bizkit, Orgy, Rammstein, Ice Cube, and Korn headlining), but I was really blown away by Korn. I've only heard a few live bands as tight as they were. I went out the next day and bought all of their albums, up to Follow the Leader at that point, so Korn wins for me based solely on how awesome they were live and I've never seen the Deftones.
I've seen both live multiple times and its Korn by a mile. If the Deftones are so good why are they playing at 4 in the afternoon at a show that Korn is headlining.
Used to love both. . . in middle school. I saw the Deftones in 1998 when they only had Adrenaline and Around the Fur under their belt. I remember them sounding like crap. I was at the Summit, and they were opening up for Pantera and Black Sabbath, so maybe comparably/venue sounded like crap. I can't remember the name of the album after Around the Fur, but I didn't like it. I kinda fell off track with them after that. I downloaded Saturday Night Wrist in college and didn't think too much of it. Around the Fur is one of my top 25 of all time for sure though. Korn is one of those bands I listened to and look back now and ask myself, "Why were you so terrible?" Other bands on that list: Limp Bizkit Marilyn Manson Coal Chamber The Anniversary New Found Glory I went through several stupid phases growing up.
I was always a bigger Korn fan (back in high school - don't judge), but I think the Deftones were probably the better band looking back on it. My favorite Korn track was Kill You from Life is Peachy. <iframe title="YouTube video player" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/dh95EgLH8Gk" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
all i know is deftones sells out austin venues all the time, korn could barley get 30 ppl to show up for a free show
I have a couple of Korn albums, but was never a huge fan. There are a few good songs on em that I like alright. Never gave Deftones much of a chance... and by the time I thought maybe I should have, just wasn't into it as much. Gave the vote to Korn, but probably not a big enough fan of either to really be in the focus group if it requires being a huge fan of either.
I was way into both in the late 90s. There were very few people arguing that the Deftones were the better band back in '98. Since then, of course, the Deftones have continued to grow and progress as a band while Korn hasn't, but in their heyday Korn was really, really fun. It's more or less a hack cliche at this point, but that sound was freaking fresh at the time. I still get the urge to listen to their debut album from time to time. So heavy and raw.
I pretty much feel the same way. I bought Issues, but didn't really like it and lost interest from that point on for the exact reasons you listed. But yeah, Korn was pretty awesome back then.
Deftones try diffenent things, so they've always been hit or miss (more misses than hits in my opinion). I'll give the vote to Korn, but they've really gone downhill since issues. Close call though. Change in the house of flies is the best song between the two.
I'm a lot younger than some of the posters in here so my first encounters with Deftones were their self titled and Saturday Night Wrist and those along with Diamond Eyes and White Pony are some of my favorite albums ever. Not a huge fan of their early stuff though.
I'm pretty sure it was part of a nasty divorce settlement. "Okay, Terry, you can see the kids on weekends, and you keep the wine refrigerator, but you... have to join a band of my choosing. heh heh heh."
