Brown was perfect for the dreamy sound they were going for. I always loved his breathy vocals and youthful voice from the golden days of the band. Unfortunately, he sounds like a drunk uncle nowadays.

Lydon-Wobble-Levene era of Public Image Ltd. was an all-star lineup. All killer no filler.

It’s funny you mentioned PiL as I agree. It’s a damn shame that Martin Atkins never really got to play with Wobble on a studio album other than the track “Bad Baby” - I do have the live Paris album that has the 4 of them but it’s not the same as their best studio work.

I would've loved all my favorite musicians to play with Wobble. That man is an unstoppable force with his instrument.

I’ll second Can with Damo Suzuki on vocals, Michael Karoli on guitar, Irmin Schmidt on keyboards, Holger Czukay on bass and of course, Jaki Liebezeit on drums.

Captain Beefheart’s Magic Band had some great musicians - you had to be great to play most of his stuff.

I really wished that Lydon didn’t go apesh!t on Wobble after Metal Box - I mean I can see why he got upset but they should have been able to work things out. The Flowers of Romance was a great album even without Wobble but he was sorely missed on the following albums.

Another fun fact - both Wobble and Sid Vicious were childhood friends of Lydon - they were “The Three Johns” (not to be confused with The Mekons side project which was named also The Three Johns) as Vicious was John Simon Ritchie and Wobble was John Wardle (supposedly he got the name “Wobble” from Vicious saying his name with food in his mouth and in a drunken stupor). Lydon knew that neither Vicious or Wobble had any musical training and expected them to pick it up as they went. While Vicious floundered and could be considered the worst bass player of all-time, Wobble was of course a natural born talent on the bass. Imagine the Sex Pistols with Wobble on bass instead of Sid Vicious…

I'm curious what "Order of Death" would've sounded like with Wobbles influence.
Lydon always seemed to (post-pistols) surround himself with fabulous musicians. Even the next lineup had McGeoch and Lu Edmonds - Both amazing albeit a with completely new direction for the band sound-wise.

There was an All-Star grouping of Page, Clapton, Beck etc from decades ago, but it leaned more into a special event rather than something sort of regular. So decided against posting it for now

Perhaps this comes closer to the requested specs for this thread.

Youtube then suggested various things such as Mahavishnu Orchestra. Manny had given them a mention early in this discussion and here is a sample of what they were about.

Sturgill Simpson's touring band a few years ago was amazing. The best live country band I've ever seen was on Robert Earl Keene's tour in the mid 90's that spawned his Live #2 Dinner album.

I don't think Black Sabbath has received a mention yet -- the original lineup and many of the replacements are legendary.

Stillwater. Although some will say Russell has outgrown the band.
