Yea, you either really have to obsessively know the albums you like and when they came out or just have some time to look them up.

No ****! Hell, Manny, do you expect some of us to come up with several dozen records covering several decades? If I decide to do it, I might be back with a partial list in a week or so. :p

(partial, because I'm not going to reveal my age!)

I'm attempting to put a list together, but this thread reveals two things to me:

-The 70's had some amazing music. So hard to choose one!
-Man, I'm old. I can't believe how quickly the aughts (00s) went by. In my mind they meld together with the late 90s. Incubus in 99? That's 11 freaking years ago!

In all honesty, I do not intend to offend but...

Does anyone else get a Patrick Bateman vibe whenever Manny posts a description about an album?

    I always chuckle to myself.

I dunno. Seems like a lot of work for little payoff, judging by the lists posted so far.

As usual, my questions would revolve around criteria for such a judgmental free for all.

Funny you should say that Rash as I was dismayed that I could not work a Genesis and/or Phil Collins album into my list. That reminds me, Rash, do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist.

I'm glad you took that well. I'm glad to see your inclusion of Zappa in those best of lists. He is truly under appreciated.

I used to work with a guy down the hall that would often say the same thing about me and Bateman. He was amazed at how much music stuff I knew, lol.

    I call BS.
no way you guys were listening to that great music when you were 4,5 or 6.

Miley Cyrus currently tops my 6 yo daughter's playlist.

(followed closely by ABBA -- and, thankfully, the Offspring, GreenDay, Great Big Sea, and Bob Marley).
