Oh that's totally fine - I'm not saying you should like STP more, not at all. If you think PJ is better, that's all good, too. However, you don't need to go crap on the Pilots and accuse them of copying PJ just 'cause they happen to sound the same.

i didn't mean to "crap" on STP. i like STP, fine. nevertheless, i found their most signficant body of music to sound a lot like Pearl Jam, a group that when I was introduced to STP, I already liked. to me, they just sound alike. and i prefer PJ.

In other news, the readers also voted "USA Today" as their favorite newspaper and "the Big Mac" as their favorite food.

Fifteen or twenty years ago I would have enjoyed some of those bands, especially Zeppelin, but today - not so much.

    :)

since this has pretty much become the grunge thread, if i had to pick a greatest hits album between pearl jam and stp i'd probably go stp, though it's very close.

anyways i think alice in chains were far better than both those bands.

I submit that you don't know very much about QR if you believe they got famous for "Silent Lucidity."

"Operation Mindcrime" still has a place in the top 10 albums of all time for me and IMO blows away anything else they ever did, including but not limited to "Silent Lucidity."

They deserve to be on this list. Perhaps not as high as they are, but they definitely deserve to be on the list.

Don't even waste your time ...

I'm actually surprised Queensryche is so high - they weren't as big as most bands on there. A little surprised the Ramones are so high as well.

Also, "Plush" has always been one of my most hated songs of all-time. "Big Empty" would probably be up there as well. Both gross Pearl Jam rip-offs, and not even good ones.

A lot of these bands are still making a killing on touring, cashing in on the chronic nostalgia of thirty- and forty-somethings. They may not be showing up on the pop charts, but that's because teenagers with too much expendable income are the culprits driving current (albeit declining) CD and merchandise sales. All the older people already have most of their preferred music on CD from 5 or 10 years ago, and the Hippos of Mass Media haven't yet figured out a new medium that will convince all the old folks to buy another copy of music they already own. (But, Ye Olde Switcheroo worked splendidly with the carrot-on-a-stick leading from vinyl/cassette to compact disc.)

Ha! And they voted themselves as the bestest voters ever in the world.

I'm shocked and dismayed the Old 97's made no appearance....

I'd rather listen to Rhett Miller than most of thebands on that list. But maybe...that makes me a homer.

I am not completely sure if you are agreeing or disagreeing with me here.

They may not have been as big as most of them, but they kept a very loyal fan base who still turn out in droves to see their shows. They made some of the best music I remember from the late 80's and early 90's and IMO are right where they belong based on the quality of their music.

My wife is actually a HUGE QR fan, to the point that in 2000 (when I was making money hand over fist), we went to the show in SA, she rode with some friends to see the next night's show in Dallas (I drove home because I had to teach the next day), and then her friends came down and we all went to see the show in Houston. Excellent show. Not top 3 for me since I have seen Pink Floyd, Elton John/Billy Joel, Rush, and several good Maiden shows, but they put on an excellent performance topped by the fact that Geoff Tate can ACTUALLY sing like that all the time, which puts him up there with Geddy Lee for me.

    andy,

I am pretty sure that TheFreak is one of the biggest Queensryche fans on this board. But I may be wrong about that. :)

what about The Band? very underrated.

and the Talking Heads should definitely be towards the top of any list like that.

I guess Nirvana should be on the list for the strides they made in grundge/rock but I still don't like them.

Where are the Red Hot Chili Peppers? They are American aren't they?

Kansas had a small handful of defining songs IMO.

    Boston?

Oh well. Can't think of anymore.

4/5 of The Band was Canadian but you would have never guessed that if you went by their lyrics as they seemed to all be from the US (only Levon Helm, the drummer was from the US - Arkansas). Agree with you on Talking Heads.
