Yeah, I'll just say I strongly disagree with the list and leave it at that. Not that there aren't good to great solos on it, but that the ranking and the solos left out amount to absurdity. The first solo listed for Frank Zappa comes in at #60? Give me a break!

I scanned the list rather quickly and it looks okay on the surface but if you get to digging, you will find some questionable calls and curious omissions. Yet you do have to remember there has been LOTS of great music over the years, that they probably should have expanded this list to 200. With that being said, there are only 2 things that really stood out for me - one was the fact that they had listed at freaking #99, Jeff Beck's "Since We Ended Up as Lovers", a song originally written by Stevie Wonder and is off Beck's monumental instrumental/jazz fusion album, "Blow by Blow". If you really listen to it, then you are going to say to yourself, "Damn, the 98 solos ahead of it must REALLY be good." Which of course isn't the case. That solo should have been in the top 25 easily. The other gripe I have is that there was no love for Ritchie Blackmore's stint in Rainbow. Yes, I know he was listed a couple of times but those were all Deep Purple songs. Find the Rainbow album, "Rising" (it was their second) and listen to the song, "Stargazer". I can't remember exactly where the solo starts (the song is like over 7 minutes and it is one of those building epic like songs), but once it starts, you are not going to believe how LONG Blackmore plays. It is ASTONISHING and that is a solo that should have been in this list.
Found it via youtube: <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/SedQcg-65a8&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/SedQcg-65a8&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
Yea...when I was coming to the end of the list...I was actually shaking my head going "where the hell is Alex Lifeson of Rush?". Then, I saw "Working Man" at #94 and that at least made me refrain from calling out the list for being biased bs. Like Rush or not, Alex Lifeson has always been innovative at guitar solos...along with being a great guitarist. "Working Man" had some bad ass solos on it and it was Rush's debut album. He had many more since that time that some other posters mentioned. "Limelight" always gets recognized as a favorite. Personally, I thought "Freewill" also deserved to be on the list. That is an awesome solo that I always look forward to seeing in concert and is usually a time when the fans go freaking nuts because it rocks so hard.
Damn, I forgot all about this guy. Saw him in Memphis in the early 90s and was blown away by his style. Thanks for the memory.
I'm sorry, but any list of top 100 guitar solos that has only ONE Santana song and not have this song, Samba Pa Ti is folly...to me anyway. Not to mention nothing by Roy Buchanan, specifically The Messiah Will Come. Plus the fact, as someone mentioned earlier, no jazz reps. Folly I tell you, FOLLY! meh, enjoy Santana while you're here anyways! <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/C0uHRl-Q8Fo&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/C0uHRl-Q8Fo&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
Wow. No John Frusciante? F*** that list. That dude has some great ones. Easily one of the most underrated guitarists out there. Along the same lines, Ted Leo has some good guitar work, but I didn't expect many people to know of him. Nirvana on their twice? You've got to be kidding. They should not be anywhere near that. I am curious to when classic rock will stop dominating these things. Do we have to wait a generation? I know there are some great ones, but music didn't stop being made in the eighties. I look forward to what these lists look like in 10-20 years. I'm sure there will be other omissions then, but still. Either way, these lists are always a little ridiculous. Little Wing from SRV would've been nice to see. It was cool to see Maggot Brain and Paranoid Android on there though.
Maggot Brain at 71 is weak. This has one of my favorite solos - i just like the way it starts: <object width="640" height="505"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/QdPjX8QWSjg&hl=en_GB&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/QdPjX8QWSjg&hl=en_GB&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="505"></embed></object> Sharp Dressed Man instead of Just Got Paid or Nationwide? <object width="853" height="505"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/6c7d8BYJy8I&hl=en_GB&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/6c7d8BYJy8I&hl=en_GB&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="853" height="505"></embed></object> And there is this: <object width="640" height="505"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/rmAQHjs4b3E&hl=en_GB&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/rmAQHjs4b3E&hl=en_GB&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="505"></embed></object>
Yea...hard to pass up the SRV version of "Little Wing" but looks like they gave the nod to Hendrix on that one instead. The Nirvana one for "Smells Like Teen Spirit"...I didn't realize that solo was so looked up to. It wouldn't even be on my top 1,000. Noone is ever going to agree on a Top 100 list like this...EVER. You may respect certain parts of the list, however. That is all anyone can expect.
ohh these lists... <br> <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/RZul_mSFczs&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/RZul_mSFczs&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> <br> <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/iyKpoh1YHew&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/iyKpoh1YHew&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> <br> how are these not on there???
Lifeson is a great guitarist, no doubt. I have always been way more impressed with his "song writing" than say his solos. I can see how a bunch of guitarist gearheads would not show him more love. My most memorable Lifeson guitar work is the harmonics intro to Red Barchetta, which is not hard to play but sounds really cool  Part of the problem I have with the list is that some of the songs listed have great guitar work but not so much in the solo. One of my all time favorite guitar song is Crazy Train by Randy Rhoads, which has an amazing into riff and a forgetable solo. Mean Streets by EVH is another great guitar song with amazing intro and forgetable solo.
It's not the top 10 most difficult solos... November Rain isn't technically difficult but the tone and notes are just perfect. I'd take it over any Steve Vai solo that I have no chance of pulling off.
Guess I have to show some love for my favorite guitarist. Here ya go suckers! 2:33 in. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/xo-zYsJ_y0M&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/xo-zYsJ_y0M&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> 3:19 in <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/JQYJRw4R4-Q&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/JQYJRw4R4-Q&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> A couple of other favorites. 10. song: Crossroads guitarist: Eric Clapton band: Cream album: Wheels of Fire I like Clapton, but this version of Crossroads is terrible. I have never understood why it has become popular.
