Murphy would work fine as an assistant. He has skills, and can teach. He can work his way up.

They'll be practicing at the new arena right? Didn't I hear something where the practices would all be open to public?

I think Calvin would make a fine ASSISTANT Coach.

He already has a great relationship with the players and could make the first year or two a little eaiser on a new coach that doesnt know them at all.
Plus Calvin could give them that little piece of "Players Coach" they will be missing without Rudy. And the new head coach can lay down the law.

"Now that's unfortunate, Bill. What they're simply doing is taking the ball to the basket, and allowing the Rockets to collapse on the penetrator."

Don't underestimate the extent to which outside pressure can influence things. Remember Oilers coach Jack Pardee? Before that, he was the UH coach, and got the Oilers job after an incessant "Hire Pardee" drumbeat from the local sports press.

    I can see Calvin...

"Let's see, I get paid to watch basketball games, I get about four months of vacation per year, dozens of fans send me junk food to each season, and since I'm a Houston sports icon, I have excellent job security, because I was instantly re-hired after the backlash when I was previously fired. I know, I think I'll go to a profession with 60 hour work weeks, off-season scouting trips, lots of pressure and stress, and more job turnover than the fast food industry...Oh yeah, I'll also be following the most successful, most beloved coach in team history! Where do I sign up?"

Here's the real question - why is Mattress Mac doing this? He can call Les up direct. He's the Rocket's broadcasts biggest advertiser. Shoot, Mac can pay Calvin's salary as an assistant. He doesn't need to run an advert (esp. one with no tel# and no email). How does this help him sell more furniture? Is he looking to boost minority sales?

The new arena has a practice facility inside that has viewing windows at street level. You will be able to walk by and see practices.

I don't think Muph is ready to be a head coach, but I wouldn't mind having him as an assistant. He knows the game and would encourage Cat and Wink to take open 15 foot jumpers. My only requirement would be that he has to take the batteries out of his suit before the game.:D

If I had a dollar for every time Calvin began his analysis with the phrase 'That's unfortunate, Bill....'. Too funny, Baqui99.

Not "open". There are windows into the practice gym on the sidewalk. I'm guessing they will open and close curtains when they choose. I would imagine Van Gundy wouldn't want all of Houston on the street watching practice. Just a hunch.

I'm sure they'll open it from time to time but don't expect to watch a 2 hour practice every day.

I remember one game I watched a few years ago and it went like this:

Bill: Well it looks like we are having some techincal difficulties with Calvin's microphone

    minutes later.

Calvin: Whoo! I didnt think I would ever get back up. Bill have you been fiddling with my knob?

I burst into tears shortly thereafter in laughter.
