Meaning NJ isn't anywhere near as bad as the stereotypes of industrial sights/smell/guido population/accents/etc. As a Texan, I was fed all the above stereotypes by the like of John Stewart, Leno, and other notable media personalities from the NYC area. In that region, it's cool to hate on NJ. It was mostly very affluent suburbs, trees and national parks, and some college towns. I think dbags exist anywhere as does grime and poverty. Well, maybe not Switzerland but you get the idea.
Why do I feel like this show is going to be a massively more douchey, urban version of this? <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/TSqkdcT25ss&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/TSqkdcT25ss&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

My roommate is actually from the Jersey Shore (Tom's River, NJ) and he said everyone back home is really upset over the portrayal of the show. He says that all these guido's they show, aren't even really from the area. They all travel down from Long Island and other parts of NY. The funny thing is my roommate and most of his friends actually look like those guido types, but without the body tan stuff.
your roommate is lying. Tom's River isn't really the shore. Jersey shore means like, within walking distance of the beach, and alot of folks there just like they are in the show. LI has tons of guidos but they usually go to the beaches in LI or to NYC to go clubbing on weekends. NJ has plenty of its own guidos.
In Northern NJ, there are some really nice towns. Like Summit, Montclair, Milburn, etc...It is one of the richest states and in fact has the second highest per income household in the nation.
Not so much LI, but I would estimate that around 80% of Seaside Heights' summer guido population is from outside the state, mostly Staten Island.
