Congrats on getting the job.. that's awesome.. . maybe my econ degree will get me somewhere near wallstreet one day
I actually love being able to walk around everywhere unless you are late to a get together downtown. That being said the past 2 winters were ABSOLUTELY brutal with the temp hovering near 0 Fahrenheit!!! I remember that my hair (kinda longish) actually froze after I had taken a shower in the morning and was walking about outside for five minutes last winter. Sometimes I do miss Houston weather...strangely enough.
DARIEN I'd give anything to have this in my house, even for a week. BUD ...few thousand dollars down the drain if you ask me. DARIEN Oh really? (looks at him quizically) Well, I guess you can kiss that career as an art appraiser goodbye, because we paid over four hundred thousand for it at the contemporary picture sale last June. BUD (chokes) You could have a whole beach house for that. DARIEN Sure you could....in Wildwood, New Jersey. (or Austin, Texas )
OK, so I found out where my temp housing is...14th St and 4th Ave. Flying up there on Saturday morning. Anyone have any recommendations for my wife and I to grab some dinner in the area? Thanks for all the advice, guys....
Wow you are right on Union Square. Are you in Union Square South (the building) I have heard it is very nice (though expensive.) I've lived around slightly east or west of this area for years (hell, I'd buy you a drink but I'm actually flying out of JFK myself tomorrow for the rest of the month). Restaurants: you are right in the middle of it. Getting a table will be tough though, it's saturday, so beware. Off Union Square itself you can't go wrong with Union Square Cafe (on 16th) (one of the best, though underappreciated restos in the whole city) But Saturday is tough sans reservation so you should call first Also right off Union Square is the Blue Water Grill (also on 16th) which is very good (though long lines, beware) and a few other restaurants that are probably pricey though not quite as good. A short walk away: Gotham (12th & 5th-also very very very good, not sure if you'll be able to get a table ) Gramercy Tavern (20th & Park) again, very very good, probably won't get a table on Saturday night unless you want to eat early or late) Patria (Park avenue, & 20th also) South American cusine, excellent, maybe a little easier to get a table than the rest though not easy. Mesa Grill (annoying celebrity chef Bobby Flay's place) on 5th and 15th is another place where you can't go wrong. There are many more. If you want cheaper eats, walk downtown from 14th on 1st, 2nd, or 3rd aves. A huge selection from every possible cuisine you can think of. (Off 1st, I like Cyclo (vietnamese) and Miracle Grill (nuevo southwestern kind of) Welcome to NYC and enjoy!
Hey, I'll be visiting my girlfriend in New York City now that she just moved up there. She doesn't know of any restraunts in the area because she has been busy with school. Since I see that many of you guys are knowledgeable about the area, I was wondering if you knew of anything cool/exciting or good places to eat around 92nd and Lexington? Appreciate the help.
Yeah its the Union Square South Building. Glad to hear its nice. I'll try to enjoy it while its free. I have a feeling once I start spending my own dime on lodging I will be staying in something less swanky. Thanks for the advice!!!!!! Looking forward to the trip, plus catching Ryan Adams at the Beacon in two weeks.
I lived on 17th and 3rd about 3 years ago. I would definitely recommend Shabu Tatsu. They specialize in Japanese hot pot (Shabu Shabu). I used to go on Sundays..... Since you are next to Union Square, I would go to The Coffee Shop for drinks and breakfast and Republic Noodle for some spicy asian dishes. A couple of things you better get used to... No refills on drinks and small portions. Good luck!!!!!!!!! By the way, I guess you are in the financial industry. What company are you working for?
if you can handle Spanish Harlem, there is an incredible bar/restaurant called DinerBar on Lexington and 101st, they have caribbean flavored dishes and every day there are amazing lunch and dinner specials. i highly recommend it
I'll be drinking the KoolAid and joining the "unique culture" that is Goldman Sachs. Looking forward to the change of pace.
Don't rule out Brooklyn. It's a very short ride from Brooklyn Heights or Carrol Gardens to wall street area. You will still pay a lot, but you might get more room and windows for your money. Plus if I had my choice, I like Prospect Park much more than I like Central Park. Apartments in NY are much smaller than what you are used to if you are coming from Texas. I lived in NY for 10 years, and it took me a long time to get used to the size of bedrooms, closet, lack of windows etc. For the first 8 years I was living either in Carroll Gardens and then Park Slope. The last two years we found a killer deal and it was on the upper west side. If I could have lived anywhere in New York I wanted, it would have be either Brooklyn Heights, or Grammercy Park. The east village or even the west village would be on the top of my list, but the weekend evening crowds seem like they might make living there kind of crappy.
Well I am living in the village now and its pretty crowded every night. Its ok. Any idea where a Texans fan can catch the Texans on a Sunday in NYC? And dont say ESPNZONE, I hate Times Square.
