pretty good part of town in general -clean, rich neighbors and established shopping areas..... however unless you plan to get a car, I'm pretty sure you'll have quite a bus ride (2 buses at least).. to get to UNLV.
It's not a bad area, but. There are **** load of power lines around that intersection. Boca Park is not really a park I believe. I live down the road on Sahara and the only park of any note is Desert Breeze. There are lots of shopping outlets, restaurants and golf courses really close to that intersection as well. The Charleston bus runs about every 20 to 25 minutes. You can take that to Maryland pkwy. More often than not, the Maryland bus is always packed, but your wait shouldn't be more than 20 minutes. But I remind you, it's almost always full. $550 rent for that area is cheap, so depending on how good the place looks, it's a deal. Depending on how long you'll be in LV, if you think about moving somewhere else in the valley, you might want to stick to the 89117 or 89147 zip codes.
Wow...I didn't realize how many clutchfans.net guys were living in Vegas. I'll agree with what plcmts17 said. I'm not overly familiar with that area...I've been out that way a few times for work and a few times to Red Rock Casino (which is really nice, btw). Definitely look at getting a car asap. While the valley is not that big, you'll want your own transportation and not having to rely on the bus system. If you're interested in a car, you might want to check out the Valley Auto Mall in Henderson by Sunset Station. There's a dozen or so dealerships located in that one spot...so you'll probably find something you like in your price range. As for the apartment...looks nice. Standard apartment complex in Vegas. As long as the grounds are kept well and the apartment owner is insured and taking care of the place, I'd give it a shot. Make sure your potential roommate is responsible (financially). The positive is that is sounds like he's on the lease and not you. Also, try, and I cannot emphasize it enough, try like the dickens to get a covered parking space (when you get a car). Shade is your friend in Vegas.
Yeah, I noticed that. I'll be test driving a car I'm looking to buy as soon as I get there. Thanks for the advice. I'll definitely keep all this in mind. Thanks for all your help in this thread. I didn't realize how many Clutchfans lived in Las Vegas either. Granted I haven't been here that long, but I thought there was only one guy who was from LV, because he had it in his moniker. Anyways, to each and everyone of you, thank you so much for all your help. It's been invaluable and much appreciated. I seriously owe all of you guys lunch at some point in the near future for all your help. Thanks!
So Kwame...how's Vegas treating you? The really nice time (weather-wise) of year is about to arrive. woot!
Hey boomboom...thanks for asking. I was going to post one final update, but I thought people might get tired of hearing about it. I really like it here. The Summerlin area is real nice. The facilities at UNLV are much nicer than I thought. There are lots of good restaurants close to my apartment and there's nothing like having access to a Grand Lux Cafe (in the Venetian) that's open 24 hrs lol. The cost of living isn't as high as I thought and the standard of living is higher than I expected (although I didn't know too much to being with). Also, there are good looking women everywhere and I mean everywhere. I just see them walking around in the Summerlin area, at bus stops, at UNLV, driving around, and obviously on the strip (which I don't frequent too often). Everywhere I go I've just come to expect fine women to be around and I'm rarely disappointed. In general, I've found people here to be pretty helpful and somewhat polite most of the time. I like how there's no state income tax like Texas. The weather isn't as bad as I thought it was going to be and it's good to hear that the nice time of year, weather wise, is coming up. I can't believe that I thought I could get around town by using public transportation. I'm glad I bought a car when I got here, because the bus system here doesn't seem to be very efficient. One bad thing I have noticed is the way people drive. I don't know if there are just too many distractions or what, but people drive real erratically here. Overall, I can't complain. I think it was a good move and I'm looking forward to spending at least a few years and maybe even more here in Las Vegas. Again, I want to thank all the guys in this thread who helped by offering up their knowledge and advice. Thanks!
post your NBA player sightings. everytime I go I see so many of them. I even ran into Walt Williams aka the Wizard.
Tinman, my man, it's funny you should mention that, because when I first moved here about 3 weeks ago, my friends who helped me move stayed at the Venetian for four days so I hung out and went out with them while they were here. One night we went to Ghost Bar at the Palms and afterwards my friends were playing blackjack and I was hanging out at the hotel bar. I leave my seat at the bar to go see how my friend's are doing at the blackjack table, but there's this group of people blocking the way. I'm just standing there and they're not moving. So I look up and guess who's right in front of me, one of the biggest Rockets' killers of all-time, Gary Payton. He had that silly grin we've all seen on his face and I just started laughing a little and shaking my head. His boys gave me a funny look, but I gave GP a little nod and he gave one back, and then after I said excuse me, him and his entourage cleared out a little space for me to get through. He was being loud and obnoxious just like he is/was on the court. That's it so far, but like I said I don't hangout at the strip too often, because I don't want it to lose its appeal. Although, that might change once the season starts. Nothing like being able to watch all games simultaneously at a sports book.
