I'm moving to the East Coast in 3 days and I need to sell a vehicle. This is partly my fault since I overvalued my truck ("good" if not "excellent" condition by KBB terms) and didn't sell it fast enough. Basically, the truck is worth $9000-10000 on KBB for private sellers. Dealer retail is around $11,000. Autotrader's instacash offer is $7,000. I had it on Autotrader/Craigslist for $11,000, but just dropped it to $10,000. 1) Should I drop it to $9,000 and put FIRM? 2) Should I physically bring the car into dealerships hopefully to get a better than $7,000 offer? 3) Can someone else (parents/friends) sell my car if I sign the paperwork ahead of time? I'll be in another city in 3 days. Thanks!
If you don't need the money right away, your parents/friend can sell it on your behalf for a much better price than what the dealerships usually offer. Just make sure to give them the title to hand over. On Craigslist, write something like "For sale 10.5K, but if purchased today $10K" Are you starting residency?
Thanks for the advice. I didn't know if people would be okay with buying a car that has a title in someone else's name. I guess this is pretty common? Yep, starting residency up at Georgetown!
Ah nice. Congrats! DC was my dream place to train, but I never got a spot there. IMO it's the best city on the East Coast. If you are living anywhere in DC proper, you definitely won't need a Hummer over there.
Yeah, if it's a relative /close friend should be set, don't get taken by lowball offers from traditional dealership. I would just have deed and transfer forms filled out, should be fine. Another option is having title ready and emailing transfer form filled out later but I think if the person handling it is competent it'll make it easier having it ready to go.
Thanks!!! What specialty are you in and where did you train? I'm living in the edge of DC, Fort Totten area. You're right, I don't really need a car, but I already bought a newish 4Runner (thought I was going to Baltimore or New Haven).
Thanks for the advice guys. Sold it for $8700 privately. Got lots of calls/texts when I dropped the price to $9500. Carmax's offer was $6700. Autotrader's instacash offer was $6900. Texas Direct Auto's estimate was $5,500 - $7,000 (didn't bring in truck) Guess selling vehicles privately is still the way to go.
I think they would have definitely given him more than the 6700 carmax offered. they did say up to 7000 in their estimate.
Texas direct auto offered me $9k for my car but I sold it for $14k privately on cars.com 2 weeks later. Selling privately still the best if you have time.
