For in town moves it probably just makes more sense to hire movers. But when I moved from Houston to Austin, I rented a U-Haul and then hired people to load and unload. So all I had to do was drive the truck, which sucked, but it did save me quite a bit of money. Will probably be doing the same thing when I move back in a few months.

Pack early and don't wait til the last minute.. You'll be super happy when you realize how much work you dont have to do because you didnt wait.

Pack up so much in a day.. pick a room each day or every other day to pack up. Put as much as you can in boxes

Why don't you see if any CF'ers would be willing to help you with the move? For a fee off course, but hopefuly you'll be able to trust em a bit more than some movers. (Just don't hire any CF'ers you've gotten into internet arguments with)

Yeah, but I don't think I'd trust MoBalls and xcharged... and I know RocketGruegerManP95X would be willing to help, but he's done so much for me and loves me too much I can't do that to him. ;)

SRSLY speaking, though... we might box up stuff and move a lot of boxes and smaller items ourselves, and do the moving company for heavier stuff. Awesome, that was also the advice you gave.

This. This is the way to go. Me and wife, suv and pick-up truck for anything we could handle, then movers for big stuff. No way I was going to move that piano. Movers paid by the hour, so have everything ready for them.

Movers are worth every $. Box up your small stuff and let them deal with the large stuff.

*** Dont get scammed by movers, be very careful of what you sign in your agreement. Had a friend who was charged $5000 to move across town. He was told it would cost $300 but had signed a paper stating all these fees in small print. After taking his money they just threw all his stuff on the bottom floor of the parking garage of his new apartment and left. Cops couldn't do anything bc of the signed document.

These things are worth their weight in gold. You can make one yourself pretty easily or just buy one.

We plan on doing the same. Box up everything and just have the movers deal with the heavy furniture and appliances. The question I have is with the desk and bookshelf in the office. In order to save time, should we disassemble them prior to the movers showing up, in order to save time (since they charge per hour)? Or are they so quick with that stuff that it makes sense to just let them handle it?
