If it's any consolation, since 1960, only two major hurricanes have made direct hits in the northeast: Hurricane Gloria in 1985 (New York) and Hurricane Bob in 1991 (Rhode Island). According to this chart I found at NOAA's site..Connecticut has only had 8 direct hits since 1900, and only 3 of them were category 3 and stronger. That stat is misleading though, since most of the storms that hit that state were before 1960.
