davo- "Apocalypse Now" was never intended as a realistic Viet Nam movie. Coppola used Joseph Conrad's novel, Heart of Darkness as the basis for the film. He even had the same title character (Kurtz) and substituted Viet Nam for the Congo of the book. Having said that, "abstract junk" is as good a description as any. ------------------
RM95, rockHEAD, mc mark and Pole Can you guys help me out with Apocolypse Now! It was heralded as being so good, and so many people like it, that I want to know what I'm missing. I've watched it a couple of times and I just can't seem to appreciate it - in fact, my current assessment would still be "abstract junk". I asked my two people I know who were in Vietnam (one of them Special Forces) what they thought of the AN, and both said that it was unrealistic, and that Platoon was a much better representation.
