They did. It was The Condemned with Stone Cold Steve Austin. Maybe it wasn't an intentional remake, but it seemed pretty obvious it was ripping off of Battle Royale....except they watered it down for an American audience and replaced the teenage students with convicted felons.
Shawshank Redemption is something that could never be remade...imitated yes, any movie's story and themes could be copied, but to be remade, no. And as I was thinking about that...I thought of a movie that I'm surprised has not been remade yet...and that's The Last Starfighter.
Sarcasm aside, quite possibly the worst movie I have ever seen. Probably one of those things we should strike from existence.
Along this path, though it doesn't have DW Griffith's reputation, Gone With the Wind is just as inherently racist (The house maid prefers slavery; Ashley & Rhett go off to join the [unnamed] Klan, to get revenge on black people who looked crossly at their white women). I know there's been a sequel (/reimaginng) written, and I think a TV movie, but I doubt anyone would seriously remount that petulant, whining Southern b---- as a heroine in a modern Hollywood epic.
Casablanca. It is one of those movies that lives on with every generation. The quotes alone have inspired many other films and books.....round up the usual suspects.
Did they remake the old one? I remember seeing that movie when i was like 5. After that movie, i knew to never tease kids when i got older. Magic was also one of those movies that i wonder if they will remake.
I've been reading "To Hell and Back" by Audie Murphy. They made a movie version in 1955, which admittedly, I have never seen. BUT.... I can't imagine the 1955 version would be appropriately violent enough to express the true horror of war, nor would it feature the language of war. And on top of those two things, Audie Murphy, who played himself in the movie, had them tone down the real-life bad-assery of himself, because he apparently didn't think the movie-going audience would believe any of it. In other words, he didn't think anyone would buy the truth, and Hollywood complied. (And yes, I read this on Cracked.com, but I've read this in other places as well.) So, I humbly submit To Hell and Back, a movie that probably won't be remade, but is a rare instance of a movie I would like to see remade.
Memento Napoleon Dynamite Blue Velvet History of the World, Part 2 (though we're still waiting on "Part 3"..heck even a Part 1 )
