I'm probably in the minority, but that didn't do much for me. The switch from guns in the original to martial arts in the sequel was a bad choice, imo. And, the fight with the many Smiths just highlighted how ridiculous it is to follow the premise of the matrix to its pedantic conclusion. Can't speak for Matrix 3, since I too boycotted after 2.
If Speed Racer had been a frame by frame adaptation of two or three of the original cartoons, it would have been a major success. What's even more depressing is that Hollywood learned nothing from that flop and will repeat the same mistakes with Johnny Quest.
Funny about all this, I watched The Matrix again last night. The first time my wife had seen it. (Not joking.) She had tended to avoid science-fiction-ish movies. When she saw The Matrix she couldn't believe that she missed it in the theater. As for Revolutions and Reloaded, they have their moments, but the talky scenes are boring and the fights are redundant, maybe just thrown in there to pad out a lack of original ideas. Damned disappointing.
I can see that. I guess...but there was a ton of martial arts in the original as well. Plus, car chases should get measured by themselves as well! And that car chase was awesome. Trinity: You always told me to stay off the freeway. Morpheus: Yes, that's true. Trinity: You said it was suicide. Morpheus: Then let us hope...that I was wrong. Oh, and let's not forget Trinity's motorcycle jump at the utility company and her legendary (extremely sexy) landing ... that has been copied in many movies, including the opening scene of Ironman 2 with Starks landing at his convention.
I have to be skeptical about anymore potential Matrix's. 2 was kinda disappointing and 3 was just painful.
Here's Trinity sticking her prefect motorcycle landing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_1JMyOcUcA&feature=player_embedded
Watch Iron Man make the same landing. <iframe title="YouTube video player" class="youtube-player" type="text/html" width="640" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/6o1wind1iUc" frameborder="0" allowFullScreen></iframe>
I actually liked all three. Nothing will top the first of course, but the second was still good despite some flaws...mainly the fairly horrible CGi on neo during the Smith fight and the flight sequences as well as the lack of pain/blood. I also think the movie would have been better had it started with Flight of the Osiris instead of the dream sequence. Revolutions I liked because it was different. I think a lot of people had problems with it because they didn't realize most of it was to take place outside the Matrix. I was fine with that. I liked the big battle with the mechs and sentinels. I anybody involved in the trilogy though thinks it'd be a good idea to resurrect this franchise, they are sorely mistaken. I think it's time has passed...maybe 10 years down the road or something, you could come back and revisit; maybe the peace between the machines and man become strained. But now it's still too soon I think. Kinda like Pirates...I got a little Jack Sparrow fatigue.
Whoa. Had never heard that. From IMDB about Larry/Lana Wachowski: "Estranged wife Thea Bloom was her [Larry's] college sweetheart. She [Larry] left Bloom in 2002 for Karin Winslow, a professional dominatrix, who left her husband to take Wachowski on as her "slave."
A friend of mine were just talking the other day about how awesome the first Matrix was. Not only did it have revolutionary special effects and an original story, but unless someone ruined it for you, it was a kick butt surprise to what was happening. We walked out of the theater awestruck. I bet I watched it 4 times in the theater and just about wore out the DVD. The second one was a decent flick, not really living up to the first, but had decent and exciting scenes. People are too hard on the second one, but if it was a stand alone flick, its pretty good, it just couldn't live up to the first. The third one was pretty lame and I tend to try to forget that it exists.
^mmm... Yeah my son and I liked Speed Racer...I would see a 4th & 5th...redemption for the last one..I hope...
No. It's my favorite movie- I've watched it a good fifty times. Shawshank Redemption is close, followed by Fight Club. I'm talking about sublime movies.
I didn't enjoy the following two because they became really convoluted; although, that could be expected. The first one, even if it was open ended, rounded nicely: Neo was practically God, he was going to free humanity etc. So, when his first line in the second movie was "I just wish I knew what to do," I was "wtf , you're Jesus, dude." And they pulled some bull**** to drag Smith into the last two movies.
That way-too-long article linked earlier was quite a strange read. The professional dominatrix left her husband, but that husband was actually a woman who had only a male upper half. I think the husband still has a vagina. Anyhow, it was the weirdest thing I've read in a while.
A major significance of the 1st Matrix movie is it absolutely POSITIVELY made up for the letdown of the wretched terdfest of then highly anticipated Star Wars Phantom Menace, and then some. Phantom set fantasy sci-fi back 5 years, Matrix brought it back. Yup, same here. After the village space rave scene, Matrix lost me. Though the ensuing car chase scene was epic. And it still led to a very Matrix costumed Halloween season, everyone was wearing stuff like this Spoiler
I think the identity crisis and possible existential questioning of it all had to have a DIRECT effect on making something like the Matrix. Asking what it is real and what isnt, asking which reality do you choose to accept.
