the trailer looks good visually but hopefully the actual movie will have an edge of nastiness about it like in roald dahl's books.

i think chitty chitty bang was the movie that roald dahl had the greatest influence on (he wrote the screenplay) but had to tone it down for american audiences.

    Edward Scissorhands was fantastic.

Now, Sleepy Hollow could have used a little work.

So did anyone else go catch this? I did and I loved it!!!!!! I was a bit worried since I am a big fan of the first....but they pretty much stuck to the original and the extras/upgrades were for the better in my opinion. They added more to the story. Of course I'm a BIG Depp and Burton fan.....but even still...my husband isn't and he went in quite the cynic and came out loving it. The boy who plays Charlie is an amazing little actor! He was great in Finding Neverland too. Great job on this remake.....in my opinion. Now I need to see Wedding Crashers!

i loved that movie. i can't believe it doesn't get much run for creepiest movie as a child. i may search for it on video just to watch it again and see if it's still the "sh - it your pants" creepy.

I started a review the day after i first saw it, but it was getting too long, so I scrapped it. I'll try again later and see if I can streamline. I enjoyed it and I think it's a great kids movie. I know some people were wary of the direction Depp seemed to be taking Wonka. He claims he in no way was doing a Michael Jackson thing. Wonka has locked himself in his factory for many years, so of course he's going to be a bit pale. I also want to say that I'm very happy with how they used that annoying Willy Wonka song from the first teaser. Now I understand what they were going for with that song and it's an awesome parody.

I thought the best parts were when the ompa lompas were singing. Those scenes were just hilarious. But I thought the ending was kind of hollow.. didn't really have the heart/emotional pull that it could have.

pretty much agree with you there..... i really enjoyed the movie and thought they made some pretty funny references, but the ending was a little bit of downer. very anticlimatic if you will. quick question.... is that how the book ends? if so, i wouldn't be nearly as disappointed.

    but a quality movie overall.

I haven't read it, but the book ends like the first movie, with Charlie and Wonka flying off in the glass elevator for the sequel. Now that I think about it, I didn't really mind the added in story about Wonka's dad, but it ended up affecting the way the movie ends.

I thought just flying off in a glass elevator was a cheesy ending....always did. I guess it worked in the 70's though. I liked this ending alot better. Although I haven't read it, I wouldn't be surprised if this ending was closer to the book b/c they said the first movie wasn't very true to the book....hence them naming it Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory and not Charlie & the Chocolate Factory (the book). It is my understanding that Dahl wasn't very happy with the first one and this movie recreated his vision better than the first.

Well, the ending of the book is that they (Charlie, Wonka, and his family) fly off in the elevator and the next book continues from there.

I wanted to point out also that the score was very obviously Elfman, but the Oompa Loompa songs were very Oingo Boingo in their sound and style and Elfman sang all the songs.

I read somewhere that the oompa loompa songs in the 2005 movie were taken right from the book.....the lyrics that is. Any truth to that? I need to read the book.

sorry to bump this back up...but i just watched the movie. i love johnny depp but the first movie always creeped me out! so i was really really looking forward to this one. when it was over, i was a bit disappointed. it was as weird as the first one and if i saw this when i was 9 (like the first one), i prob wouldn't have liked it. i didn't like the oompa loompa's...quite strange looking. some parts were rather funny and i overall liked it but that's prob mostly b/c of johnny. <sigh> i'm in love with him... :D

i thought the kids were casted pretty well, esp the girls. i liked everyone except the boy from colorado.

on another note, Corpse Bride looked pretty good.

the movie is pretty good...no better or worse than i expected at least. johnny depp puts forth a fantastic performance though, so i'd definatley recommend it just for that.
