The movie sucked. Wolverine didn't kill enough people. He is supposed to have an intense rage after all. And I'm very pissed that I stayed past the long credits for that wack special ending.........
Not a comic-book fan here, but I enjoyed the move - B+ is a fair grade. I liked the way they stayed away from any cheesy bits. My wife liked it enough that she wants to re-watch the others. For me, it might have been the best one of the series. Spoiler Not giving Agent Zero the Adamantium bullets made zero sense.
Wade's Deadpool is weapon XII? So go after a new lead? I thought having Reynolds as your lead would be a solid move. He has the humor side down and can draw a decent audience. Its a real shame Marvel didn't handle these movies they could have tied everything in perfectly.
Wolverine 5 out of 10. The characters had no motivation, the special effects looked kind of cheap and the story was convoluted. A couple of things- *****Spoiler alert****** * There is more homosexual subtext to this film then the a Morrissey album, NTTIAWWT. The climactic fight scene on top of the nuclear power plant versus the sword handed man (!) with his mouth stitched up was, uh, something. * So, why did Wolverine become Mr. Justice and Compassion after being a killing machine for over a 100 years? They never really explained that.
Spoiler Because his entire life his character had been defined by his history and memories, starting with his biological father killing his foster father, being forced into exile and mostly the bad influences of Sabretooth. Obviously he never really wanted to be what he was, and he kept trying to get away from that life. His memory being wiped by the Adamantium bullets basically gave him a clean slate and a chance to start off a new life as a good guy.
My thoughts: I'm willing to give it a B. At worst, B-. X-Men 3 was FAR worse in nearly every conceivable way. I was a Marvel buff until the early 90s (good timing, what with the way Marvel went haywire during the Clinton administration), and so while I'm a decent comics geek, I also accept that the movies have to take liberties. Heck, Marvel itself wanted a second take at half the stuff they did - there were plenty of mulligans that they couldn't take until they started doing the Ultimates line. The way they yo-yoed with the Hulk originally is one major example. You just have to cut that out. (Of course, they did a better job than DC, which hit the 'reset' button every couple of decades and ret-conned the entire universe). Point being, I'm not bothered by Fox taking massive liberties with the origin story. Especially if this is a prequel to the X-Men franchise that they took such major liberties with. Their sandbox. I thought it was an overall good summer movie. Won't rank high among comics movies, though. My two big disappointments: -The script was straight lifted from the Jean-Claude Van Damme/Steven Seagal Hall of Fame. Super ops agent quits to live a peaceful life until his former squad guns for him, kills his wife, and sends him into a revenge fury. Good lord. -The special effects were A.W.F.U.L. In the bathroom, the claws looked like cartoons that were out of sync with his movements. They went on the cheap and it was glaring. The craptastic CGI all but ruined the movie for me. If I were to take issue with the story/origin itself, it's that Wolverine pretty much never lost control and tackled the beserker rage. All we got were people like Victor and Stryker TELLING him he was a wild animal, but nothing to back it up. This is supposed to be a major part of his character, and it totally got the Disney PG treatment. Boo. Giving Credit: Reynolds did great with Deadpool. I was good with Sabertooth. Liev did him well. The flashback opening credits scene was good. Overall, they did a nice job stuffing a solo film with characters. I appreciate that. I was very surprised that Ma and Pa Kent were the Hudson's (Alpha Flight). I can only guess that *maybe* their oft-mentioned son may be a possible lead-in. They never explicitly said he was dead. For those that missed it like I did (probably a repost) I'm disappointed to find that Magneto has been placed in the freezer. I like that Deadpool and Gambit spinoffs are possible, but am not holding my breath. They really wasted Reynolds in this one - he was SCREAMING for more scenes, yet he gets the least screen time of anyone on the team. They'll need far stronger material if they don't want Gambit to suck in a big way. Wolverine 2 could be good, if they indeed go with the Patch/Japan/Mariko angle. A lot of material there. I'm crossing my fingers over "X-Men: First Class", which apparently the end of this movie was a seque to. I'm pretty worried since the producer is saying she's looking for a light hearted/tween comedy thing. I was trying to catch all of the kid mutants they cameo'ed: Diamond version of Emma Frost (blah - I liked Hellfire White Queen SO MUCH more) Kid Cyclops Quicksilver (bound up) Toad? Psylocke (purple braid)? Banshee (muzzled) Stryker's son from X2 (the blue/green eyes on ice) Storm was filmed, but her scene cut (would have been a continuity issue) Jean Grey wasn't seen but almost has to be in it
This movie made me realize that I do want more X-Men movies. I thought X3 ruined it for me, but this nice little flick has restored my faith.
I liked the movie even though like X3 it went away from the comics stories. Wolverine did remember being involved in Team X they was usually fight against Soviet Union for the goverment their biggest villian was Omega Red. But for what ever reason in the X series and Orgins they have him loose his memory.
