Went in hopeful, but expecting a pretty standard biopic on Dylan. While Mangold did a good job on Walk the Line, coaxing a great performance out of Reese Witherspoon, my expectations were tempered. I wasn't a fan of Chalamet. That said, he delivers one of those performances..when you watch it, you know...Oscar material. It's fine acting, NOT imitation. The singing/playing is bravura. Ed Norton is in his usual fine form as Pete Seeger. While the film follows standard biopic formula, the performances are big...huge in Chalamet's case. We'll be checking it out again in the next few days and I highly recommend it to anyone, not just those of us who revere Dylan.

Thanks for the review. Didn’t know Norton was in it, I’m a big fan. I had zero interest but now I may catch it on streaming.

    Screams Oscar bait.
Not a great fan of the musician so it did not grab me.
Not a great fan of the actor so it did not do much.
It's funny cause these are the movies . . ." the artist" want to make
because they feel they are "superior" to other movies.
niche movies that are only seen by a few folx

They keep pushing Tim . . . mainly because Hollywood likes to be able to decide who is granted
superstar status and it's losing that ability
I've seen several think pieces claiming that the downfall of hollyAdvertisementswood is the lack of STARS
to carry movies. That Story, Plot and Marketing and Advertisements sway people more
than WHO is in the movie.

She nailed the Golden Globes, she didn't get all nasty in her jokes, just enough to make people laugh but not enough to make people cringe...............and she is easy on the eyes

I will see this at some point. My favorite biography of anybody, musician, or not was Todd Haynes’ film about Bob Dylan, “I’m Not There.”
    A masterpiece.

This review in part got me to go see it sooner than later, and I loved it. Totally agree but maybe rank the Norton performance and the Baez actress performance even higher than Chalamet's. The Cash scenes are money (if you will).

Just fantastic movie making -- an immersive 2+ hours and I want to see it again.

Definitely, I think, a movie for anyone interested in music or a convincing drop into the early 1960's. So, so good.

Haven't seen it yet, but a good friend has and his reaction was much the same as your own. Surprise at how good it is, especially Chalamet and Norton.

i still havent seen dune (its on my list, back off!) and im pretty unfamiliar with the dude, but i saw him on colbert or some other talk show recently with his moustache and i found him pretty obnoxious. he does seem pretentious.

ive had enough people whose taste i trust tell me its a pretty good movie so i will watch. im mainly curious to see how they do early 60's NYC.

what are yalls top 3 dylan albums?
    highway 61 revisited
    blood on the tracks
    blonde on blonde

but the one ive listened to the most over the last 10 years or so is infidels. the band on that album is an all-star lineup...
mark knoffler and mick taylor on guitars
    benmont tench on keys
reggae artists sly and robbie on drums and bass, one of the all-time great rhythm sections.

    Blood on the Tracks
    Highway 61 Revisited
    The Freewheelin Bob Dylan

Completely agree with you on Infidels (just imagine how much better that album would be if it included Blind Willie McTell and Foot of Pride). I also think that Planet Waves is a hugely underrated album.

I will always love Desire too. Timeless album, at least in my playlist.

If we're talking personal underrated Dylan albums, my entry is Nashville Skyline. I wouldn't put in my top 3 or anything, but it's such as easy, comforting listen I find myself putting it on a lot.

As a younger man, I mostly knew Bob Dylan for his wheezing, WTF singing turn from "We are the World." Steve Perry, Daryl Hall, Michael Jackson and then....Bob Dylan, sounding like a homeless person the stars pulled from the alley into the studio: "Sing this." "We are the WORL. We are the CHIDDREN."

Now that I have Sirius XM and hear a lot of Bob Dylan, I'm fine with his voice. I guess it fits the folk rock genre. He was less nails-on-a-chalkboard when younger. And other, better singers made hits of his compositions.

If you think his voice was bad back then, listen to it now - he literally sounds like a frog croaking.

I hope you heard him by accident. Clicking on "VHI: Behind the Scenes" or whatever. No one should subject himself to such torture.

Willie can't sing now either, who cares? They're still Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan.
