I've written and deleted this several times because I didn't want to potentially deal with the BBS PC police, but here goes: While this is a superhero movie, it is based entirely on a very-real religion that, though many people might not realize it, still exists today....and Heimdall, who is literally called the "Whitest of the Gods" in Norse Mythology....is being played by Idris Elba....who is black. So....there's that. Elba is a fine actor, though I think The Wire is the only thing I've seen him in. But to the best of my recollection, there just aren't any black folks in those old-school viking eddas, never mind a chief member of the pantheon. Anyway. Maybe that's what bebop was referring to? I have no idea.
I felt the same way when M Night gave the leads to white actors in the Last Airbender. But my biggest beef is Charlton Heston playing a Mexican in Touch of Evil.
Yeah, I have issues with stuff like this. Like Jake Gyllllenenenehhgkal playing Prince of Persia (which, admittedly, I never saw). Or Zhang Ziyi (Chinese) playing a (Japanese) geisha in Memoirs of a Geisha. This one was practically an international incident. Also, it turns out the book was written by an American white dude, much to the chagrin of my half-Japanese gf at the time, who found this out immediately after a several-minute long rant about the audacity of having a Chinese girl playing a Japanese part...it was as hilarious as it sounds. Anyway. I don't mind changing fictional characters so much, but I'd like historical and/or religious figures to at least sort-of look the part.
You mean like how Western white actors get to play French, German, American, Australian and pretty much anything they want? Besides japan has no right to complain about that. If a japanese got casted as a Chinese character, then there might be something worth complaining about. Like that dude in the recent Red Cliff movie.
There are directors that doesn't know how to handle a certain type of genre and isn't the right person with the proper creativity or visual to put it on screen and give it the proper respect. Even though they might be a good director in drama but some failed miserably in other aspects and vice versa. For instance Michael Bay. He know how to do actions and blow up stuff but the idiotic can't tell a story.
Branagh is known for his Shakespearean film adaptations. Those adaptations are usually over the top in acting, sentimentality, etc.... There's nothing in his resume that indicates he understands a superhero movie.
Two worlds??? How bout sticking to just one world for now... Natalie Portman again, star wars prequel wasn't enough...
Same here. I remember seeing the Iron Man trailer and thinking it looked like crap, hell I use to collect Iron Man comics but the previews with RDJ looked so cheesy I thought I would be disappointed...I didn't decide to watch it until I heard a lot of folks giving it great reviews. Even then I reluctantly went to see it and ended up really liking it. I think this trailer looks pretty good. Will definitely watch.
Why doesn't Thor talk like Thor? "Oh no, this is Earth, isn't it?" should be: "Tell me, wench, where dost the son of Odin find himself?" I know they just dressed a dude up like Thor, but it shouldn't be that obvious. Thor isn't Thor without the ridiculous, grandiose manner of speaking. I SAY THEE NAY, BRANAGH! You'd think all that Shakespeare would have taught him something.
Hollywood casting rears its ugly head again. This guy just doesn't seem like any Thor I've seen or read about. You would think they would make him this larger than life guy with what another poster said grandiose manner or speaking. It's almost like Topher Grace playing Eddie Brock/Venom again.
That pissed me off SO bad! That skinny little weiner playing someone who is supposed to be as diesel as Brock/Venom? Ugh! I really didn't like Tobey Maguire as Parker/Spiderman either. Nerdy; yeah he can do that. Sarcasm/humor? Nope, terrible. Hopefully Sony does better with this "reboot" they're planning.
Totally agreed. I mean they can't find another role for the black and asian guy and they don't belong in Norse Mythology. It's like putting a black guy or a white guy in Chinese Mythology. Screw the producers or director that had a part in this. No wonder there are so many reboot already because they can't get it done right in the first place.
but they give us some of the best stuff. <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/oa8GNnaLZ4E?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/oa8GNnaLZ4E?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
