If this turns out to be the movie I want it to be, I imagine it'll be very damn pertinent to a city like Houston
Absolutly fantastic movie! Just stunning! Saw it over the weekend and I still can't stop thinking about it. DDL is the Brando of our generation.
I thought Daniel Day Lewis had one of the best performances I've seen in a long time. I will be shocked if he doesn't win an Oscar.
Another person who was surprisingly very good was Paul Dano from Little Miss Sunshine and The Girl Next Door
Wow. What a flawlessly unsettling movie. Daniel Day-Lewis is insane. "You're a b*stard in a basket! a b*stard in a basket!"
Dano's best performance so far was in L.I.E. opposite Brian Cox when he was 16. That movie is way messed up though.
I thought it was slow. Daniel Day Lewis is great, but like 4 things happen in the movie, and it takes them 40 minutes to tell each one.
I need to know if I should see this or No Country For Old Men first... If I HAD to make a choice, which one would you recommend?
He was totally insane. Although one of the only minor complaints I had with the film was during that part. It didn't have to do with DDL though. Spoiler It was when they showed the flashbacks of him with the kid. I think everyone understood that he totally lost it at that point, and that in the past he truly did have some love for the kid. He was trying to be more hurtful than truthful though certainly there was truth on some level. The flashbacks were a little heavy handed I thought.
I thought it moved along pretty well for about the first 2/3 of the movie, then it really hit a slow patch leading up to the climax.
There are a couple of classic scenes. Otherwise, it's no big deal. They could have peeled 45 minutes off of this movie without leaving out much.
Let me just say this: "Magnolia" was a pile of crap. Ripping off better movies ("Short Cuts" by Robert Altman) is one thing. I can even somewhat handle a movie not having a single believable character. What bothered me about "Magnolia" was that the characters were used as the most lame and boring set-pieces for Anderson's themes. Hmm...a children's show host who is a child molester and is named Jimmy Gator! That's *brilliant.* A "good cop" who tells the audience- repeatedly- yes, you guessed it, that he's a good cop. All of this half-baked and hysterical nonsense was presented as if it were *profound*. That's why I'm a little leery of all the hype around "There Will Be Blood."
This movie was crazy cool. Think: Blood Simple crossed with A Clockwork Orange and you'll be on the right track. I actually loved the WAY in which this movie was filmed and I could almost watch this movie without sound. Best film I've seen in a long, long time.
