They messed up at the end. Though 911 was officially established in 1968, it was accepted very slowly and in 1977 it was mostly unavailable. I never heard of it until the 80's.
Well this is an alternate reality where Richard Nixon is still President by the 1980s and where due to the abilities of Dr. Manhattan, technology has advanced in certain areas, for example, cars ran on hydrogen IIRC.
Yeah, a big reason behind all this viral marketing stuff is to kind of establish the universe this movie is based in. So much of the layering and richness of the graphic novel was creating this world. That's the sort of stuff, however, that will get cut from the theatrical release when studio execs start getting their hands on it. So Snyder is using the viral marketing to partly do that job for him. I think it's pretty smart.
Same here and it's being done very well, we are just about a month or so out, can't wait to finally watch this on the big screen!
Ok, I just realized that there may be a problem with the ending.. Everyone knows there is not going to be a giant calamari at the end, but.. (spoiler tag for those not from this planet who have yet to read the book) Spoiler Ok, the whole entire story turns on the death of Comedian at the beginning, right? Right. However, the *reason* that Comedian was killed, that is of supreme importance to the validity of the entire story. And of course, in the book, the giant space squid is the reason he was killed - ie that he accidentally found out about it, and Ozy found out that he knew, and hence killed him. So my question is, without the giant squid, how will they keep the same valid reason for Ozy killing Comedian? Comedian somehow lands on a island in the middle of nowhere and discovers a 'list' which is linked to a plot to blow up New York with a bomb that mimics DocM's energy powers? Umm.. ok I guess so, but that seems awfully thin. Hopefully this is just a minor nit-pick, but it's just that the squid was not merely the big ending thing, there were links to it all through the book, talking about all the artists going missing, artists tied into the Black Freighter, etc etc, all hard at work designing the squid, thinking they were working on a movie special effect. So how is that all going to translate into a simple bomb? This worries me a bit.. Ok, carry on.
Links to 4 clips can be found here: http://www.slashfilm.com/2009/02/17/four-new-watchmen-clips/#more-20070 Snyder uses way too much slow mo. It was kind of cool in 300, but it is looking like he may go way overboard on this one. Every iconic scene involving any action seems to use slow motion. Nero, I too am worried about the ending in the movie. Spoiler Everything that Veidt does is to try and prevent what he feels is the eventual earth destroying nuclear war. By creating a giant squid alien monster, he hopes to scare the entire world into believing there is a greater threat right? I have no idea how making machines that mimic Dr. Manhattan's powers will make people think they have a common enemy when Manhattan disappears at the end anyway. If the visual of a giant squid monster was too much, I don't know why they didn't compromise and just fake an attack from an alien spaceship and maybe put some fake aliens on the ship. That would have worked.
But when you think about it, there really aren't that many action scenes in the books. I worry about the ending, but I'm not too worried about Snyder's affectation for the speed ramping type action.

There several clips on yahoo right now, ones I had not seen yet, but apparently have been up for a week or two. One where Rorschach escapes the apartment building, and one where the Watchmen first meet as a group, and Comedian tells them it is all a joke.. VERY MUCH looking forward to this, but something tells me I can't bring my 8-year-old son to see it..
Yeah, it is an R rated movie. Swear words, nudity, graphic violence, etc. I haven't thought about it, but there may be more than a few ticked off parents this weekend who didn't realize this ain't no kids movie.
LOL, from the guy who brought us the "American Akira" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jafd97yJFOI) cartoon, comes Saturday Morning Watchmen <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/YDDHHrt6l4w&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/YDDHHrt6l4w&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> I think the main inspiration was Ninja Turtles.
