Whedon is one of my fav Writer/Directors He has great vision. I am avoiding this thread until I see it this after noon. Rocket River
I really enjoyed Avengers, possibly loved it, but best superhero movie to date no way. I think the only flaw for me with the film is that it lacked a depth and gravity that other films have shown. I didn't feel any kind of strong emotional attachment (save for one scene with Iron Man at the end) to the characters in this...they were just there to kick ass and they did. For me I'd probably go with: 1) Dark Knight 2) X2 3) Spidey 2 4) The Incredible Hulk 5) Chronicle 6) Avengers 7) Batman Begins 8) Kickass 9) Hulk 10) Blade And yes I'm including all "superhero" type movies. And that Nolan's films trascend genres shouldn't exclude them from the discussion. Avengers is up there, but it's not the best.
I think it was a Spoiler Voluntary vs involuntary type thing. I don't read comics but that's how I interpreted it. If Hulk just comes out while Banner is trying to keept it in, he can't control himself. If Banner willingly brings Hulk out, he has some control.
I have always been an X-Men fan boy and I thoroughly enjoyed the films. Never was much a fan as a child of the Avengers or any of the characters. I have come around a bit with the recent flurry of films. But this movie completely pwns all the X-Men movies for me, even first class which was my fav. I'm not gonna get into plot holes and yada yada yada, character development, bla bla bla. There were 5 movies of character development to lead to this culmination. I just sat and enjoyed. Can we please get a days of futures past movie with as much awesomeness as this flic?
Def Thor. Although Captain America was my fave of character central Avengers movies. Thor is kind of essential for this story and possibly even Avengers 2
Spoiler 1. The dude almost ate her like you said. Throughout the movie you can see that she is scared of the Hulk, just a raging machine that would rip her to threads and there would be nothing she could do about it. She teared up when Bruce yelled at her in India so imagine the fear when the actual Hulk is bearing down on her. 2. The Bruce controlled Hulk is different from the Hulk who comes out when he is angry/injured. 3. You have to be deeeeeeep into comics to get that. Thanos is in love with death (literally), so I THINK he was saying that if Thanos challenged the avengers it's like asking for death, so he smiled. Now, Thanos is one of the most powerful beings in the entire marvel universe. No idea how they are going to pull him off as the villian.
Spoiler There was a brief allusion to what Widow's afraid of. Apparently, that was the answer. My thought is the heart of the fear is a loss of control. Literally all she could do was hide. Joss may have even hinted at an abusive father with that. Spoiler Nice phrasing they used: "to attack the Earthers is to court Death" Thanos in the comics is obsessed with "Mistress Death", and when he obtains the Infinity Gauntlet, he murder-raptures half of the universe as a tribute to her. So, yeah, he liked the way his servant put that. Spoiler I'm 99.9% certain it was Loki's scepter. As they begin bickering in the room, there's a brief cutaway of him smiling and his scepter jewel glowing. And then Banner subconsciously is holding it. I came away with the impression that it was tipping everyone to irrational anger - a major Hulk trigger. Also, to that point, Banner is still unsure of how he feels about everyone in the room. Hulk-Banner share a very basic understanding of feelings towards other. When he comes back on the bike, he's committed to the group. I did enjoy Hulk sneaking in one last sucker punch on Thor Regarding what's next for the fellow seen in the credits Spoiler I still have some doubts about his being the big bad in #2. The #2 guy wasn't talking about the Avengers or even the 6 super powered folks...just "earthers" Thanos is too cosmic a guy, IMO - he's a galactic guy, calling for Surfer, Captain Marvel, Adam Warlock, etc - when he's tangled with the Avengers, it's usually been a slaughterhouse. If you ask me, I suspect he's not being set up for A2....but for Guardians of the Galaxy But Infinity gauntlet was easter egged in Thor, so who knows.
Spoiler Only thing I have to complain about was the comic relief. The movie had me laughing throughout, jokes were perfect BUT when it's the big action sequence, when I'm supposed to feel like the world might come to an end, then Hulk punches Thor or Iron Man is wise cracking with Jarvis or the New York cop and I crack up laughing it takes me out of that zone. Just sayin'.
I just got back from the movie theater where I saw The Avengers. I must say it is indeed a one spectacular super hero movie. Right up there with the dark knight and I hope to find time to watch it again. This time in 3d. It's an action bonanza laced with fine performances. From the looks of thing, this will shatter records. Can't believe the early 10 o'clock showing was sold out. Had to watch the 11'o clock I wonder where the hell is spiderman in all this new york chaos??!?! Answer below LNSFW Spoiler
The movie was a lot of fun. The setup dragged a bit so you could get wowed by the kicka$$ finale. I'd say, first half of the movie: 6. Second half, 10. Scarlett's ass walking away from the camera in skintight leather? 10. Spoiler To be honest, Whedon did as well as he could, but this film had so much getting-to-trust-each-other, and so many internal battles and such. The sequel won't have all that, just them against the bad guys.. I wouldn't mind Hawkeye and Black Widow in the next Iron Man movie. Too many characters, although that's what the Avengers is about, detracted a bit for me. Not a real complaint. Just a reason I loved Iron Man. But Hulk was far and away the coolest character. Hulk ripping Loki a new one was a big laugh and my wife loved it too. Captain America giving out the orders to the team: "And Hulk?" Smash!" Eliciting a smile from the Jolly Green Giant.
Spoiler As others have said; the difference between Hulk on the plane, and Hulk on the ground was Loki's influence (ie the scepter). It was Banner's choice to turn and thus he retained control. On the plane you could tell he was trying to fight it, but it didn't work out -- thus him freaking out and Hulk smashorizing everything. As for the end I think there's some confusion -- Thanos wasn't talking at all it was the "Other". The guy who initially gave Loki the Chitauri. As for him smiling; he likes the idea of death and obviously believes they'll be a worthy challenge of an attack from himself.
The Hulk provided for me the hardest laugh Id had at the moviesa in years. He didn't care who that dude was.
Spoiler When hulk punched thor and destroyed loki was the funniest/awesome scene in cinema, in recent memory
