im kind of upset that all the IMAX showings are 3d. I was considering driving out to Houston to go see it in IMAX on Thursday (probably at that Edwards IMAX theater, that's the only true IMAX theater in Houston right?) but I really don't want my first viewing of the film to be a 3D showing, I feel like that'll cheapen it
i'm a big fan of sci-fi movies & tv shows, but for some reason the star wars movies never interested me ( i do like some of the star wars games such as Knights of the Old Republic 1& 2 though)
It's pretty disappointing. I wish Abrams went the Nolan route with Interstellar. That movie was one of the best IMAX experiences I ever witnessed. 3D worsens the image quality.
Ok, so, the gf had actually NOT seen the original Star Wars trilogy. She *knows* the story, but had just never had an opportunity to sit down and watch them all the way through. I had got the DVD's like 8 years ago, they had just been sitting on the shelf all this time. Decided it was time for her to see them, since we have our tickets already for opening night. So I put Star Wars in, and then I have to spend the entire movie telling her 'That right there, that was not in the original version'.. soo many times during the movie. And as the movie progressed, I got madder and madder, because the utter CRAP that Lucas demanded be crammed into his 'special editions', well they suck ginormous donkey balls. I seriously think he was trying to RUIN the movies with that BS. Put in Empire, and same thing, although not AS bad, it was still horrible. And it just ticks me off so much, that so many people will literally not be able to actually see these movies the way they should be seen, before going to see Force Awakens. Please Disney, for the love of God, PLEASE get us some Blu-Rays of the ORIGINAL UNPOLLUTED VERSIONS!!!!
Am I the only Star Wars fan in the world that actually likes most of the extra things put into the later dvds? So many of the bad special effect blemishes were cleaned up and the Han and Jaba scene was cool -- never understood the hate. Of course I wish they would release a hd version of the originals with zero changes, but it doesn't kill my soul to watch the Death Star blow up with a cooler looking explosion.
No. Cleaning up sfx issues is one thing. Filling the movie with extra bits from the prequels, giant animals in Mos Eisley, terrible CGI crap all the way through.. just NO. And no, the 'Han & Jabba scene' was NOT good. Remember, we hear Jabba's name for the first two movies, but we have no idea who or what he is until all the way into the 3rd movie. Just terrible to cram him in there in a studpid scene that was cut from the original for a very good reason. It just didn't fit at all. And then the terrible terrible replacement scene when Vader is having the holographic conversation with the Emperor in ESB, completely ruins any mystery in the upcoming scenes. George Lucas is just a huge idiot, end of story.
That was actually part of the original release... they just had a different actor playing the emperor.
There were subtle changes... but Vader still has a holographic conversation with the emperor in the original version. I appreciate them trying to get some continuity by replacing the original hologram (actually played by a woman with super-imposed chimp eyes) with Ian McDiarmid. As far as the dialogue change, there's really only one line from vader that is different ("how can that be?")... not sure I have a huge problem with that. (many would have a bigger problem with Luke even having the Skywalker name to begin with... if it was really that big of a deal to keep him "hidden"). Overall, the scene is pretty useless (other than to introduce the emperor to non-prequel viewers) unless you buy the new version where people think Vader is trying to hide something.
He doesn't call him 'the son of Anakin Skywalker' in the original, he just calls him 'the Son of Skywalker'. It's just crap like that, the movies simply didn't NEED all that worthless meddling.
I could easily say that sort of subtle difference doesn't warrant that sort of backlash... they had to get that original different-actor/actress hologram out of there simply to provide continuity with the very next movie, don't you agree? (moreso than simply adding something from the prequels).
Well, honestly, no. I don't think it was necessary at all. The fact that he made such blatant changes to subsequent movies AFTER the first two were so successful, well, that's on him to figure out how to work it, but just going back and altering the originals, well, only an arrogant amateur would even THINK of doing something like that, which is of course, what he has always been.
So, you were upset in 1980 when they got Ian McDiarmid to play the emperor... rather than casting the female with chimp eyes and Clive Revell's voice? I agree that some changes were stupid and meddlesome... but I don't have a problem with getting the same actor that played the emperor in ROTJ (and played it well) to be the holographic projection in ESB.
Well, you never really got a good look at the Emperor in the original ESB.. and yes, it was noticeable that the character in RotJ looked different. I wouldn't say I was MAD about it.. there was more to be mad about in RotJ that THAT .. lol Yeah SOME of the changes were tolerable.. but so many of them just changed the tenor and flavor for no good reason at all.. like all the swooping shots of the buildings on Cloud City.. it doesn't LOOK like anything else in the movie, it just looks like shoe-horning in the same CGI that they came up with in the prequels, for no reason other than 'just because'. The ones I really HATE though are the ones that attempt to actually alter the story.. such as totally changing Han's character from the very beginning, with that lame crap of Greedo shooting 'first'. Anyway, I am just venting, you're right, some of them are not TOO bad, but I just really really wish we could choose to watch the originals untouched.
i agree with both of you. i already stated it if i remember correctly that i was trying to buy tickets when they went on sale at imax. but NO... it apparently has to be in 3d. can anyone tell me what the next step down from "imax" is (preferably in austin) assuming there are different levels of quality at theaters.
