I thought it was awesome. It was fun and yet engaging at the same time. I'm not much of a Trek fan although I did watch reruns of ST:NG every day after school. Lots of little nods and tributes to the original series were done well. I thought it was clever when they found a way for Spock to deliver 'live long and prosper' in a kick ass way. And the McCoy actor killed it.
I also give it 5 stars. Brilliant vision, direction, writing, balance, execution - best reboot I've ever seen. Simply an amazing job by all involved in the film. Loved Chekov.
This could quite possibly be the best movie of 2009. 96% on Rotten Tomatoes btw if anyone checks that site.
Saw the movie tonight with no knowledge of Star Trek whatsoever except for maybe some names. It was pretty good, but it seemed to move relatively quickly and the plot was sort of confusing for me. But I absolutely loved every actor. Exceptional casting.
Saw it. Liked it. And Vulcans... no emotion? logic? follow the rules? Intelligent? Shane Battier is a Vulcan. It all makes sense now!
just got back from seeing the movie and I was very impressed. very well done i can see why so many trekkies had no outcries whatsoever. great writing, acting, the pace was just right. recommend everyone to check it out
I thought the entire premise (AKA ability to do what they did) was really weak. I realize it was needed because of the amount of ST stuff out there, but to me it is the Sci-Fi version of "It was all a dream" If you can look beyond that, the movie itself was very good. Did anyone see where the dead Prof from Melon was in there? He said he had a cameo.
Brilliant reboot. The casting of Bones was fantastic. Easily the best casted member imo. My wife loved it despite hating sci-fi and complaining about being forced to see it for three days before we got into the theater. There were some holes in the plot that irked me, but in general it was hard to complain about.
I'm not a Trekkie by any means, but I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. It really flew by. One of the best things about it is it's high replayability.
Oh and.... Spoiler I thought Nemoy was used very well. It was a nice tribute role for him and it worked. I also thought the ending credits with saying the "These are the voyages..." line was a nice touch.
Really like the movie too. Also thought the casting was great. Not a movie buff or anything, but having a bunch of lesser known actors worked to an advantage. But since the movie isn't focused on one person only, then that was the way to go. Would not hesitate to see again if someone asked me to.
It was good, but not at all great. I understand and can appreciate the homages to the original, but there was a little too much of it. I thought, in general, they were a little too slavish to the original for a "re-imagination" of the franchise. It seemed like some of the actors were doing more impersonation than acting. And the over-acting by Bones was terrible. Best casting? He was the worst. They wasted some scenes. The scene with the car was good only for the commercials. And, I wish they had paid more attention to the settings. I was thinking during the movie about how lovingly made all the sets were in Lord of the Rings, how tangible most of them felt; they really set the scene for the medeval feel. From the trailer, I thought Star Trek might do that as well, and I wish they had. I think it would have really pushed the movie up a notch. But, the sets seemed like an afterthought. It's too bad. But, I agree with most people that they did a pretty good job with the writing and execution. It must have been a tough path to navigate between the non-fans, the kids and the Trekkies. They handled time-travel well. They kept you guessing a good deal of the time (except when Kirk, Sulu, and some random character you never saw before were sent on a mission). Entertaining.
Spoiler Not just any random character... a random character in red! I wish they had made a joke about that while they were grabbing the suites, but maybe it was a deleted scene. /shrug
I thought it was hilarious when: Spoiler the diving party (Kirk, Sulu, and no name) was chosen. Who didn't expect the no name guy to die.Just like in Galaxy Quest!!! BTW, enjoyed the movie. I've followed Star Trek, TNG, and the theater ST's, but never got into voyager, DS9, or the other versions of ST. Actually got to shake Shatner's and Nimoy's(in their ST uniforms) hands at the ToysRus in Houston when I was about 4 or 5 years old.
I disagree - I don't think even Nolan's Batman was as good a reboot as this. Slightly disagree, but I appreciate where you are coming from. Disagree completely. Abrahms, IMO, pulled a rabbit* out of his hat with this movie. He's a Star Wars guy, not a Trekkie, and confronted head on a lot of issues he had with Star Trek. He used this movie largely to establish a reset and break away from being chained to Star Trek lore (without betraying the lore - again, brilliant). He destroys Vulcan with Spock's mom and gives Spock a completely new emotional core. He inserted a few Star Wars type wrinkles, especially in his new aliens. Scotty's pet was a very Chewie type. He fleshed out the characters to a degree that had never been done before in the series or movies. He makes Spock and Uhura a couple, and establishes a light love triangle on top of it as well. Nothing that betrays the original stuff, but revamps it in really creative, positive ways. Agree with Bones. At the same time, he couldn't totally break from the original groundwork, either. The fans would hate it. I'd also say, the original cast were doing much worse caricature acting by the last few movies they did. Agree with that one, but I can't think of anything else. There certainly weren't any dead scenes. Disagree - I thought the sets looked great; the best any Trek sets have. I assumed that was an in-joke about Red shirts on away missions. Random guy was in the red suit. * that being a white rabbit with a #8 painted on its back
