As someone who hasn't seen any of the original star treks and knows nothing about the franchise, I enjoyed the movie.
Just saw it. Holy **** that was awesome. Didn't feel like it even reached 2 hours. I'm going to watch the previous movies as suggested in the previous pages. The theater was only filled to about 2/3 so that was nice. Also I did watch Star Trek as very young kid, but I barely remember anything. I'm aware of the characters, but don't know much of specific events. Good thing I did check out some clips of past movies from youtube before seeing this so I can sort of appreciate some of the references they made. Spoiler Did anyone else laugh when Spock was the one who yelled Khan's name? I swear the room was quiet and I burst out laughing. I'm sorry for that if anyone in the theater with me was reading this. Khan was badass. I found myself rooting for him throughout the movie. I didn't care about Pike's death or anyone else. I did find it weird tho that in Capt Pike's final moments, instead of consoling him, Spock was all like "yo i'm gonna stick my fingers on yo face and observe while you die alone breh." Kirk's death scene was the only thing I can think of that was little "cmon ferreals?" because we know he's not gonna die. I was about to feel bad, but then Spock went KHAN and I burst out laughing. The anti-Enterprise was bad ass. I don't know why they didn't spec the Enterprise with like that ship. It's clearly badass and could wipe out a whole fleet of Klingon warships with one sneeze. Anyway, I'm guessing if they keep the cast intact for at least 2-3 more movies, we will see a remake of Wrath of Khan? Cumberbatch was way intense. He could be ordering off of the dollar menu and it would still be intense. I give it a 9/10. Much better than Iron Man 3.
Spoiler I completely disagree with you on Kirk's "death". I thought it was perfect how they did the same exact thing from Wrath of Khan, but they flipped it around. And then Kirk saying "you would have done the same thing" was awesome. The whole movie was spot on IMO.
Is that hot blonde in the bikini or whatever in the trailer shown in the movie? How much screen time does she gets?
It's Alice Eve, the girl from 'She's Out of My League'. And yeah, she gets a decent amount of screen time.
Spoiler Am I the only one who doesn't understand how Spock was able to basically hold his own when he was fighting Khan? Isn't Khan a mega-swole superman? Wouldn't this be like me playing LeBron one on one and only being down by a couple points?
Spoiler Vulcans have superior strength to "normal" humans. 3 times the strength. So he would be able to match up against Khan...pretty well.
Spoiler Vulcans are much stronger than humans. And Spock was really pissed about Kirk dying, so that only added to his strength.
Spoiler Yeah, even Khan knew that having a pissed off Vulcan on your tail is bad news. I especially loved when Spock used the neck pinch thing and it almost brought him to his knees in agony, but then fought through it. Badass all the way around.
i love this. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/20v1OxUXcQY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
This movie is bound to be a classic just as the second origin ST movie. It has been a while (in recent years) since I've seen such a good remake. Benedict Cumberbatch is a great actor... chilling evil without overacting or forcing the character. Now if only JJ Abrams directed the next Transformers.
Finished watching it 2D. Benedict was great and really deserved more screen time. Seriously. The movie was good but the characters felt a bit too TV. That's my problem with JJ Abrahm, his background is network TV and all his films feel like expensive TV movies. Nothing necessarily wrong with that but he lacks that next level cinematic awesomeness that Spielberg, Cameron, Nolan in TDK or Del Torro have.
The movie was not good. A non-stop action sequence without a lick of originality wasn't what I was expecting at all. Ricardo Montalban's Khan would have strategized circles around this weak impersonation. I loved JJ's first Star Trek (I think it's the second best film behind Undiscovered Country in the entire series, followed by Wrath of Khan), so maybe I was expecting too much. Excitement for Star Wars...waning.
I think both Khan actors are great in their own way. Ricardo is a great Khan in a Shakespearean, tragic way (you can taste the hatred he has for Kirk). However, Cumberbatch's portayal was great also in a different way. The closest I can associate it with is with Anthony Hopkin's Hannibal character, niche's superman-like and always calculating. There was constant action, but there was a purpose. I really enjoyed the movie. To say the latter did a bad job with the part is hard to believe. At one point, you even wanted him to succeed in freeing his "family" even though I knew he was evil.
Non stop dramatic bull**** action fest. Some cool lines here and there. too much corny comic relief that was forced just overall bad
