I'm curious about this movie, though I don't play the SH games. However it is my opinion that if you have to be familiar with the games for a movie to be 'good', then the movie is not good. You are dealing with another media/medium here, and the ability to translate everything to the new audience is what makes the product 'complete'. If SH has bad acting, writing, pacing and storytelling (unless you've played the games), then it should probably be considered a bad movie. Guess I'll find out when I see it.
It is a little hard for me to say for sure, but I don't think it is absolutely necessary to play the games in order to enjoy the movie; you'll certainly enjoy the little things a little more (recreated scenes from games such as the school/hospital/hotel/etc, Akira Yamoaka's music, the siren, the creatures, etc.), but those are just some little things that are a bit of a fan service (making it awesome instead of just good, or something like that). I'd like to get some more impressions from people who didn't play the game; I have read that some people who didn't play the game thought the movie was good, and they were able to understand the story just fine. As for the acting, while I wouldn't call it worthy of an Oscar, I think it was probably better than what I was expecting. Radha Mitchell did a good job in the lead as Rose IMO, and Jodelle Ferland did an excellent job IMO (can't really explain further without spoilers). Some of the rest was hit and miss, but nothing that takes anything away from the movie IMO. I'd focus more on fixing the awkward dialogue at times than trying to improve the acting. That was my only major complaint.
im a huge fan of the game. i was impressed by the movie, best game to movie adaptation ever, hands down. my girl liked it, and i was surprised, since we dont like the same movies. she just didnt understand it, she kept asking me about it during the movie. she liked it though she just didnt get the end.
For those who need to a bit of explanation of the end of the movie, there is a SPOILER filled review on Wikipedia's website, that has an EXCELLENT review of the movie. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silent_Hill_%28film%29 btw, did anybody notice the Konami code reference in the movie? Freaking awesome eh? also SPOILER ALERT!!!!! did anybody think the ending was kind of like Dark Water? END SPOILER
This might be a stupid questions, but why isnt a MAN playing the leading role when the first game was all about a GUY looking for his daughter??
I think the thing I read by Roger Avery, he said he changed it because it made more sense for a woman with her maternal instincts to be looking for her daughter plus you would feel like she was in more danger than if it was a man.
I read something like that, but it was coming from Gans. I think what I read was something like the following http://egm.1up.com/do/feature?cId=3148003 SH made ~$20M over the weekend, and I'm hoping that's enough to at least consider making a sequel. I hope that critic reviews don't hurt the movie too much, especially since it seems like a lot of people enjoyed the movie. BTW, I found something interesting yesterday that's semi-related (Silent Hill related, but not related to the movie). http://noescape.rateofinjury.com/main.htm This is basically a fanmade CGI series of movies based in the Silent Hill world. I've watched a few of them, and they're pretty interesting...and disturbing. I thought maybe some of you Silent Hill fans might enjoy it.
Joystiq posted a link today that critics are hating SH. http://www.joystiq.com/2006/04/24/metareview-silent-hill-the-movie/
Yeah, I was really quite satisfied with the Silent Hill film. Like most of y'all I've played enough of it so that I'm familiar with it. Quite an enjoyable movie indeed, and nice acting by the R. Mitchell...I thought she fit in quite nicely in her role. Like RC, some of the dialogoue and acting could've been better.
The movie's atmosphere is awesome. Very creepy. The acting is horrible all around. Horrible! Very unbelievable. Slight spoiler alert: For example, the scene where the mom finds the 'edge' of the town and is looking down at the abyss. The creepy, old lady is suddenly behind her and speaking. Instead of screaming and freaking out that there is suddenly someone behind her when there wasn't anyone seconds before (when she was running down the street), she calmy turns around and lays some of the worse acting upon my ears. One other example, the lady cop tells the mom that she's going to take her in. That she'll have to worry about her daughter later. And she calmly turns around to get cuffed. And instead of cursing and b****ing, she's talking like she's discussing the weather. Same thing for the dad. The sheriff tells him to go home. To not worry about the town anymore. So he turns and goes. And makes some half-assed threat to come back with support. That's his frickin wife and daughter he's leaving. I still like the movie overall, but it's despite the acting.
i think the bad acting gives it that feeling of the game. the voice-overs in the earlier games were just as bad. If they would have had amazing acting in this movie, it would have clashed with the overall feel. i for one enjoyed the movie ALOT. even though i am against bad acting, it sorta fit the bill this time around. i waited so long for this movie. i can finally sleep.
Saw this movie last night too. And it did suck. Bad acting, bad plot, bad direction. I will say the atmosphere was good for a while, but the whole movie went downhill as soon as the townsepeople were introduced. Didn't particularly enjoy the scenes in the dark either. A jumbled mess for the most part. But what was most striking was how bad the plot was. I was expecting a hell of a lot more with the rave reviews the SH games get. fan service.
Well I saw it Friday night finally and I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it. It wasn't particular scary - probably wasn't trying to be - but it was definitely freaky. It had some prettty sick and twisted moments. Sets, directions, the visual style and the score all created a pretty chilling atmosphere for the film. The acting I thought was serviceable, though had a few rough moments and the plot wad decent though fell apart at the end. The key thing here is I didn't go in expecting oscar worthy material. I expected horror movie acting and storytelling and that's what I got. That said I had a few problems with the film. I think the worst moments regarding the acting came from the little girl (a little too over-the-top at times). Originallly, the cop felt really out of place; she was better suited for Terminator than Silent Hill. But once she lost the helmet, the glasses and the jacket, she looked a lot better. The atmosphere and special effects weren't as authentic as I would liked; they felt a little too artificial. And the story lost me at the end; I actually would have preferred them sticking to the game's storyline more closely, based on what I've read about the game (never played it). Otherwise I'd say it's a small victory for videogame movies as it easily beats out all it's predecessors.
