http://www.periscopepost.com/2012/05/first-reviews-for-ridley-scotts-prometheus/ The movie is top notch technically and visually stunning but the script is lacking (too many unexplained plot devices and too much ambiguity).... pretty much the pros are what Ridley Scott brought to the table..the cons are all fingerprints of Damon Lindelof, the writer who also worked on Lost. I always felt Lindelof was a hack after the ****show that was Lost in my opinion. The guy throws red herrings left and right to deceive viewers and makes up crap as he goes out without a plan. I'm all for open endedness but Lindelof uses it in the worst possible way. I hate this guy.
From the tweets at the bottom: "a camp android Jeeves vibe." Hahahaha. That's perfect (based on the little featurette with poor Fassbender.) Ah well, making movies is hard.
I wouln't be too worry. Most of the mix reactions are the one that didn't get the memo is that this isn't really an Alien prequel. The hard core Alien fans are going to be the one that will be disappointed. But as a sci-fi movies movie this is pretty solid from many translated reviews I have came across so far. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1446714/board/thread/199682701
Be careful with all the reviews. They do contain spoilers so be warn. I don't read the wole thing but skim right down to their verdict on the film. Should be getting plenty of reviews coming in from the UK very soon. http://wlswarts.blogspot.ca/2012/05/divorced-from-marketing-prometheus-is.html
It's a start and look promising so far. Sound exactly to me people who expect a true connection to Alien will be disappointed but as a sci-fi movie on it's own I think it's solid. But I will have to see this for myself. http://www.slashfilm.com/early-buzz...=Feed:+slashfilm+(/Film)&utm_content=FaceBook

Anyone else planning to see this at midnight tonight? I am thinking about it, wonder if this is going to get a lot of attention, or the mainstream audiences are just going to give a big shrug and go see the latest regurgitation of Madagascar...
There is no way this movie lives up to the hype and anticipation. If you go into the theater expecting a ten and you get a ten, the movie cannot exceed expectations. If you go into the theater expecting a ten and you get a nine, you're disappointed even though the film was a freaking nine.
Whoa whoa whoa.. You said it cannot live up to the hype and anticipation (which technically would MEET expectations), but then you justify the statement by saying it can't EXCEED expectations because if your expectations are at the highest level, the BEST they can do it MEET your expectations. ERROR 37 !!! Hehehehe I know what you are trying to say though. If it is over-hyped, it becomes almost impossible to satisfy peoples overly-high expectations. And you're right, it is very rare for a movie to actually meet or even exceed over-hyped expectations. It happens, but rarely. Avengers? Yep, did it. Better than anyone dreamed, and there were a lot of big dreams. Then there was Avatar, which was hyped for YEARS before it came out, and it still blew people away. I am trying to think of the last really hyped movie that actually exceeded expectations.. Jurassic Park maybe? I know it had a lot of hype, but it still just left people amazed. Some of the Harry Potter movies perhaps.. What else, surely I am missing a bunch.
I don't really care about hype/expectations - that feeds the inevitable backlash patrol that goes to see the movie BECAUSE of all the hype and walks out whining about how it wasn't all that (see: TDK, Avengers). I walked out of Avengers giving it an 8.5/10 and happily saw it again with a couple friends. Watch Alien-Aliens again - how complex were those stories? The most you can give it from that angle is the character development of Ripley and the enjoyable ensemble of the second film. But the plot and dialogue? Not exactly Citizen Kane. I'm excited for the visual spectacle, and for the undertones of the Alien-Blade Runner mythologies.
My stepdad and I b****ed about that movie all the way home; Spielberg's "vision" ruined a great book. My mom was in the backseat, finally yelled out, "Shut up! Shut up! I liked it!"
LOL thats what I was thinking reading the first part of your post. If you though Jurassic Park was a bad adaptation, Timeline could have been the best movie ever and was just trashed with a straight to dvd movie iirc.
I was also disappointed in Jurassic Park. I had already lowered my expectations when I saw that Spielberg was doing it since I knew then that it wasn't going to be the dark story of unprincipled science and greed that Crichton had written. Apparently I hadn't lowered them enough and while the action was decent just couldn't stand how they made Hammond a nice guy instead of the cold blooded money grubber he was supposed to be. I admit to having lofty expectations for this Prometheus and maybe I am setting myself up for disappointment but I have faith in Ridley Scott. Off the top of my head I can't think of any of his movies I haven't enjoyed and everything I have read and seen so far it looks like Scott is masterful as ever. One thing that does have me worried though is that Coors Light is doing a tie-in. I hope that is all the corporate shills got to do is handle marketing and the fact that it is rated R gives me hope.
I've enjoyed reading Crichton but for whatever reason there doesn't seem to be good adaptions of his books. Sphere, Congo, Rising Sun, 13th Warrior were all just awful. That seems strange because his style seems like it would lend itself to movies and he was a screen writer also.
The problem with adapting Crichton is that his novels are heavy on tech prose. This doesn't lend itself very well to cinema.
