6/10 - Wanted to like it more but came out disappointed. Stayed away from this thread before I saw it. Now reading through the thread, Nero's review basically nailed everything I felt about the movie.

Saw it in IMAX 3D. Went for the action, not the story-line or characters. Left impressed.

    Also enjoyed the theme music.

I find it funny that people are treating this like it was supposed to be a story-driven, A-list type of movie.

It was nothing more than a B-movie with an A-movie budget. As soon as I realized exactly what sort of movie I was about to watch, all of these "the characters weren't developed, there's so many cliches, blah blah blah" criticisms were right out the window. This is a movie with which you invite your friends over, drink a whole lot, and take the movie as seriously as it takes itself.

In my opinion, it is the apex of B-movie greatness.

It was supposed to be, but it never was. Take this quote from Guillermo del Toro, for instance.

"I really wanted to create something new, something madly in love with those things. I tried to bring epic beauty to it, and drama and operatic grandeur. Many of the quirks are going to be executed a different way than you normally would. I cannot say more because I would be spoiling stuff, as it's a year away, but there are things in the movie that I'm the proudest of I've ever been."

The problem was that it mostly failed as a big-budget B-movie actioner, too. After three Iron Man flicks and three Transformers, I expected some much sicker robot action than the weak junk we got.

Interesting because I thought both Iron Man sequels had incredibly boring action scenes. And while I did enjoy Transformers 1 and 3, the level of detail and immensity of the robots and the fights in Pacific Rim trumped the former. It felt like Transformers was holding back a little at times. Optimus would start to go all badass and then disappear in the middle of a battle. Or it would break away to the comic relief storyline with the human characters.

Should there be a sequel, then as a movie that establishes the universe and the capabilities of the jaegers, I think it largely succeeded. But definitely they would need to up the ante next time.

Fully agree. I didn't go into the movie with any delusions about seeing the next Casino Royal or Dark Knight. It clearly wasn't mean to have that type of depth plot-wise.

    7/10
To me, this movie was everything a mindless summer action flick should be. I'm very critical of movies in this genre, as there is a fine line between mindless fun & stupidity. I think Pacific Rim found that sweet spot. Seeing it in IMAX 3D was crucial. The cinematography created a sense of scale that I found thrilling.

Will be a sequel, It'll be the 2 guys that read the memory of the small Kaiju. The Kaiju's brain have what scientists claim "Hive-like" structure, all memory are shared. I think the plot would go in from there

    Best actor young Mako.

Yea, that flashback scene...well not exactly flashback...was probably one of the highlights of the film. Pretty well done.

Saw the movie in IMAX 3D and was blown away. GIANT MECHS FIGHTING GIANT MONSTERS, basically it's a 2 hrs of awesomeness.

I don't know how anyone can dislike the movie but once again, we're talking about a GIANT MECH FIGHTING GIANT MONSTERS.

    The mechs are soooooo cool.

Unless you watched this on bootleg or just don't enjoy things being destroyed in movie, I can't see how you don't like this movie.

Watched the Wolverine movie yesterday -- it felt like a direct-to-video release with lame CGI and shoddy action. Guess this is what happens after being spoiled by the epic action sequences in Pacific Rim. :(

This seems to be Fox's formula- throw money at something and hope the movie hits. Marvel Studios and to a lesser degree Warner have learned to get top notch directors in the seat and let them steer the plane.
