Good or bad, better get your popcorn ready, because its a movie by M. Night Shyamalan base on a graphic novel called Sandcastle.

I actually enjoyed quite a few of his movies throughout the years...Signs, Devil and The Visit (creepy as ***k). I have no clue what this new one is about but looks interesting nonetheless. Any thoughts or expectation?

The fact that he didn't write it makes more interested in it.......

You have two options when u hit a home run like he did, try to do it again and see if your talent matches your new ego, or let someone else take your ideas and make them better. He’s had a bad run following his ego, so it’s just time for him to get more minds involved to tweak what he wants to do.

    M. Night has really made a pretty solid comeback after about a decade of garbage.

He got to a point, where studios stopped letting them play with their money after the duds. Then when M. Night financed his own (the visit, split), quality went back up. He seemed to try harder when it's own money on the line.

From a technical know how perspective, I feel he could be successful if he ventured outside his current genre. His current genre is suspense thriller (with some horror element). I say this even though Avatar was one of his few departure where it was action/adventure flop. That project was too ambitious for him, and he didn't quite get the source material.

But say if he wanted, he could try a different genre. It could be a documentary, kids movie, western, or romantic comedy. Some other small scale film not Suspense/Horror. The reason I say a different genre is that when advertising, the trailer alone will signal to audience that M. Night is NOT giving a surprise ending. Otherwise, he and his lead actors would have to warn audience during the press junket; to avoid false expectations.

The twist ending is his brand and puts undue burden. Also, I'm not sure doing that repeatedly is creatively fulfilling for him. His earlier films had the advantage of audience not expecting a surprise, and then got one VS, audience expecting one each subsequent time, and Russian judge that surprise.

Hollywood movie 101 formula is typically.
    • A captivating beginning. Some world building, premise introduced to hook the viewer. Commonly movies use an action set piece. Like how they got to that island.
    • A middle that doesn't drag.
    • An ending - closes on a high note, when audience walk out the theatre.

If a movie has mediocre beginning and middle, they can get away with a decent score, if the ending was super good. If someone paid for a ticket, they're more inclined to sit through vs after market when the movie gets on TV, and user flips the channel because beginning/middle got boring.

The ending is also one of hardest thing to nail correctly because it should follow the rules in the world building. So the surprise payoff doesn't feel cheated.

Is M. Knight burdened with having to deliver a surprise each movie? Is he handcuffed to the formula at the expense of just telling a good story. Old credits M. Knight as the main writer, but he adapted it from a graphic novel. Lot of the heavy lifting is Shyamalan's script. So he should get the credit/blame, depending on how the movie is received.

Old (as far as i know), also don't have the franchise interest that helped Glass' box office (unbreakable / split / glass). So as a standalone, it's the trailer and M Knight's name drawing the interest. The trailer looked kind of meh; like a longer, more expensive Twilight Zone episode.

M Knight, could very well want to stay in this genre in which case, he should do his best to deliver the goods.

The pre-screening reception has been widely mixed. Some say its his best work since the Six Sense, some say its his worse and some fall in between. Typical response for a M. Night Shyamalan movie. LOL
