Saw it tonight, so freakin' good. Kind of wished the movie was an hour longer just to hear Rudd riff a little more. "I got Matsui!" -- I was the the only guy in the packed theatre that laughed at that. It's a good time to see R-rated comedy -- Apatow keeps putting heart into these things are we're better off for it. This was a touching, sometimes teary movie (the "heartbeat" scene got to me, the girl getting freaked out, Rogen getting alternately freaked out/excited) combined with the awesomest of dick jokes. Jeff brought up a tremendous point -- I think I laughed the hardest at "Wedding Crashers" in the theatre, relative to all the recent comedies. And now I own the DVD and have seen it twice since then, and it just isn't there to me. Just your typical 80s, nice guy-vs.-yuppie guy comedy, with only the brilliant acting (from all involved, really) to save it. But with Apatow's stuff, it only gets better. I lorded over the deleted scenes of 40-YO Virgin DVD just a few nights ago, two years after it came out. Apatow writes, damn well. I'll be watching this movie for years. The list, as I see it ... 1. Anchorman 1a. 40-Year Old Virgin 1aa. Knocked Up
I like how the dudes are always taking shots at the guy with the beard, gives that legitimate feel to the movie, most movies don't do that kind of thing
I saw it last night. A few things about the experience, not really about the movie, surprised me. 1)It was showing on only one screen in a smaller theater at my Tineseltown. Pirates and Oceans were on about 8 screens each. I didn't think a movie like this would be relegated to one small room when Shrek the 3rd is on 4 screens. 2)The first time they went to a gynocologist and she put her feet in the stirrups, at lest 5 women in the audience went "Oh, I hate those." WTF? Do you really need to verbally reminisce about your last doctors visit in a crowded movie theater? 3)The loudest laugh came at the "rear you child" joke. I was shocked because I'm sure that like me, at least 90% of those people had seen the previews and knew what was coming. I don't mind laughing at the joke, it's funny. But I was kind of surprised that the one joke they heard before was the one that got the biggest response. Anyway, good movie. More dull spots than I was expecting. Probably wouldn't put it above 40YOV, Dodgeball, Talledega, Anchorman, Crashers, etc. But a funny move nonetheless.
"He looks like Matisyahu"...haha. I thought it was a good movie. Not the most spectacular thing ever, but it was good. I thought I would like Seth Rogan's character more, but he kind of annoyed me, even at the end. Katherine Heigl (who I have a HUGE woman-crush on, ever since Roswell) and Paul Rudd were the highlights for me. I love the fantasy baseball draft...that hit home in an endearing way... I also liked the gyno scene "That's not your vagina, thats your *******!" and the weird jealous girl from E! in the office scenes.
it ended #2 with 30.7 million last week. if the estimate below hold true, and it only dropped $10 million in week 2, that would be amazing. http://www.mercurynews.com/news/ci_6109021 An exception is Universal's comedy "Knocked Up," which held up strongly in its second weekend with $20 million, coming in at No. 3 and raising its domestic total to $66.2 million. Critical praise and audience word of mouth sustained the film, which stars Katherine Heigl as a career woman who becomes pregnant from a one-night stand with a slacker (Seth Rogen).
There were many deleted scenes in that movie because it was improvised throughout. The idea for the movie came from a skit Steve Carell did at Second City (when they are sitting at the table talking about sex). Judd Apatow is brilliant and has a great eye for talent, but I'm pretty sure he would admit that his "writing" had little to do with the success of The 40-Year-Old Virgin. The reason you can watch that movie so many times and still laugh is because it wasn't just one or two people behind a computer typing out punch lines and gags for a screenplay. Apatow allowed everyone to be creative on their own, and that allows you to go back and catch what you may have missed the first time. It's like that stupid Bosch painting.
The fat guy Jonah is hilarious "you should probably get that one thing, it rhymes with Shmishmortion, I won't say it for baby ears over there. But you should get a Shmishmortion at the Shmishmortion Clinic." "What the **** man?If i go in there, and see ****ing pubes sprinkled on the toilet seat, im gonna ****IN lose my mind! Last time I went to the bathroom i took a shiit and my shiit looked like a ****in stuffed animal!"
I love the fact that this isn't some toned down PG13 piece of crap. I wish more movies would push the edge a little and get an "R" rating and not be so worried about filling every seat with families. One thing I failed to mention, I though HEIGL was fantastic. Not only is she hot, but she a good actress. I found myself thinking how natural she is on screen. I've never watched Grey's Anatomy and don't plan to, but I'll likely be interested in her next movie project.
Isn't that how it always is with movies? Saw this last night and I can't answer this either, except for the fact that everyone knew it was coming. Seemed more like a forced laugh...and I don't even think it was funny to be honest. They could've used something else in the preview, but whatever. I was sitting in a packed theater with a couple folks and next to me were these girls, probably no older than 15 or 16. I know they didn't get 80% of the references and were probably pissed at me for laughing throughout. I wasn't expecting this to be anything from seeing the previews, but was impressed and satisfied; very entertaining.
The exact opposite happened the theatre i was at. There was a laugh, but it wasnt nearly as loud as most of the other parts.
Yeah, that was just a badly-placed series of thoughts on my part. The improv parts were great, AND Apatow writes quite well (the sweeter parts). There was a group of stoners across the aisle from us. That REALLY helps the movie-going experience. Everyone loosens up and laughs more. Few laughed at the "rear your child" part.
Ditto. It was a funny line and it was even more hilarious that I was the only one in the theater laughing at it. I liked the movie overall, kind of slow in some parts but was a good time. The line about the chicks milk arriving was way creepy though.
I watched 40 Year Old Virgin again last night, and I have to say that I liked Knocked Up better because its one you can watch over and over again. 40YOV was still great, but i guess it was great when you first watched it and thats it.
Saw it over the weekend. I liked it a lot, but like others have said, I may have to see it again to truly appreciate it. Reading through this thread reminded me of some funny parts that I forgot about, and that's usually the sign of a good movie to BUY on DVD. You see something new every time you watch it. Can't believe no one mentioned Harold Ramis playing Rogan's father. Ramis is responsible for some of the funniest movies in the history of cinema. I thought he was perfect for that part. Off topic, I thought Wedding Crashers was tremendously overrated.
