Well if you exclude his first two films... you know what I'd probably go with True Lies too....I love the movie, it's pure fun. But, at the end of the day, it is pure popcorn action. There's not a lot of depth there. I LOVE The Abyss...the only thing that I cringe at in the movie is the message he tries to shove down our throats during the television interview scene, and at the end of the extended cut when they show the wave and more tv clips. I don't think it needed it. I think the message was pretty clear in the theatrical version w/o the hokey tv news stuff. Otherwise, the atmosphere, the characters, the romantic subplot...perfect. Least favorite though ....that'd be Terminator...just doesn't hold up well with age imo.
I agree. I think this movie is going to finish at around $300-350 million. I think the Abyss was the weakest of JC's major movies he was involved in. The end was way to cheesy for me. Terminator is an all time classic that even though the special effects don't hold up the story does. Tom Arnold and Bill Paxton's characters in True Lies made that movie epic imo.
nothing to do with AVATAR but since i'm a noob and can't create a thread or search for it.... True Lies is one of the best action comedies ever. the first hour that tom arnold carries is worth the price of admission by itself and, as usual with cameron, the action parts are spectacular. think about that, cameron got tom arnold to carry a decent chunk of a summer blockbuster and then made arnold schwarzenegger almost look like he could act and speak english (he doesn't speak english as well now as he did in this movie). and he got jamie lee curtis in a thong. this movie is gold. granted cameron has made so many good movies that it is with the abyss fighting for 5th place (you can't put it over Aliens or Terminator 2, and it doesn't have the impact of Terminator or box office and oscar impact of Titanic) in terms of lasting impact/being remembered, but it was still damn good. it is certainly good to here that Avatar is apparently not going to suck. it seemed weird to think cameron could get 12 years to make a movie and make a crappy one, but it was headed that way until all of these reviews have started coming in.
Saw it last night at Imax. The story feels like something out of a Disney movie but there is a lot of violence. Overall what saves this movie is the superb CGI of the many scenery/creatures which kept me awake throughout this long film.
Are you kidding?!?! Aside from the typical 80's action/drama soundtrack, I've always though it is one of the few movies that holds up well.
The special effects are pretty dated too. But who are we kidding...it's not like he's made a bad movie...it's just that I prefer Aliens, T2, Abyss, True Lies and Titanic over it. To each his own.
Titanic was easily his worst movie ever. Not only was it his worst, but it is one of the worst ever period. That was such a piece of garbage I can't believe it was the same guy who did Terminator and Aliens. Those two are really his only good movies, and the rest are mediocre to bad with Titanic being just pure garbage.
I don't particularly care for Titanic, but that movie was labeled by a lot of people as the colossal sinking ship that would bomb big time and ruin Cameron's career, and boy did it prove them wrong in a big way. There is no doubt that he is a great director.
I think a lot of us still have chilling memories of Celine Dion singing my Heart Will Go On while we pranced about on our verandas believing we really were on top of the world. It was a truly iconic movie that took the world by storm. Jack! Jack! Roseeee. Spoiler Could someone explain how they did the CGI? Or why it took so long to develop?
The Abyss is a freaking awesome movie. I prefer the original ending. But don't know how one could dislike that movie. Ed Harris is great.
I don't know crap about this movie (looks like a mockery of the Star Wars universe) or where it started but... meh, here it goes: Anyone else thinks Cameron looks like an OLD version of Matt Bullard?
The 80's dancing is epic in that movie. I can't help but laugh at this scene even though it should be very intense. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/VqLETO_epi8&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/VqLETO_epi8&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
I hate Titanic, but calling it garbage is silly. It was an epic love adventure movie that hit the audience it was intended for exactly the way it was supposed to. It was very well made, well acted, good visuals (particularly one scene!) etc. It was just sappy as hell and sucked as a guy to sit and watch it (except one scene!)
No doubt it was successful. That doesn't make it a good movie, or him a good director. I loved both Terminator, and Aliens. I'm also looking forward to seeing Avatar in a guarded kind of way. There is no doubt he is a competent director. I think there's plenty of doubt he's a great director.
It was garbage, because much of the acting wasn't good, and the writing was overly sentimental with one dimensional characters(especially the bad guys). It was competently done, but the fact that it was a big hit doesn't make it great directing. I will agree that there were some nice visuals. Though even the best visual in that movie isn't as good as the most average visual in most Terry Gilliam movies especially Brazil. But visuals are only part of the jobs of the director.
