The more I watch bits and pieces of this movie, the more I realize that this is really a B- movie or a C+ at best. The visuals were stunning at first, but it gets kinda old for me real fast. I guess that's just me though. I guess I'm more of a good story-telling type of guy, than a no-story/awesome-visuals kinda guy. However I still think the colonel (or whatever his rank was) is a total badass, especially him jumping into his robot think with flames on his shoulders towards the end.
My understanding is that they're rereleasing Avatar in 1000 3D theatres, Max, with 9 more minutes that had been trimmed from the original theatrical version. If you are going to see it for the first time, assuming you haven't already done so, 3D is the way to go. It is easily the best 3D flick yet produced. Sneak in some goodies in your sweetie's purse, put on the glasses, and prepare to get your mind blown. Very, very well done, IMO.
In other words, it's classic Jim Cameron. Don't go to his movies expecting a mind-twister. He's an action director at the top of his field.
This coming Friday from what I remember on the commercials. This is the only movie I've watched in theaters in about a decade probably (that I recall, anyway) and it was worth it. Most movies are just a waste of money to me, so I don't bother going to theaters (that, and I have this weird thing where theaters and planes are the only places I can sleep easily, so it's a waste of money for me to go to a theater - I'll probably fall asleep 20 minutes into the movie).
i sleep fine in bed. i crush up four lunesta every night and night and snort it before i go to bed though.
...which brings us to this question: Which Avatar movie this year had a better story? (a) Avatar blue aliens (b) Avatar full of twists* *knock on Shymslsahalmalahman's movies
This Friday(27th). With added footage. I may go see it. I only saw it as a rental the first time around.
It's like a different movie with 3D digital projection. In fact, anyone who hasn't seen it that way is doing themselves a disservice.
I totally agree, I refused to buy the DVD or watch it on pay per view, the story is just not worth it.....however when you add in the visuals in 3D...it is amazing. And it is not the type of 3D that pops out at you, it simply surrounds you in an evironment....simply stunning. DD
No need to see this movie again for me. I watched it once and it was awesome. I tried it a second time and was bored to tears.
Saw it 3 times in the theaters in 3 different formats...holds up just as well in 2D as it does in 3D imo. There are plenty of films out there that are all flash and no substance, but Avatar is nowhere close to that. Story may be formulaic but it's far from abysmal. I'm tempted to see what the deleted scenes are, but I got it on Bluray now and so I'm not up to spending more money seeing it back on the big screen.
it was a mix between dances with wolves, the matrix, apocalypse now, and fern gully (possibly hoot). I liked the presentation in 3-D, but the story was like an old lady farting through an onion.
I never saw it in theaters. Downloaded a high-def rip of it and... wow! what a turd that movie was! I can say, however, that there were many parts of it when I thought, "I bet that looked really cool in 3D." So.. yeah - to support what others have said here... As a movie, it's a piece of crap. As a showcase for the capabilities of 3D film, it's probably phenomenal.
Sorry but I just don't buy it...like I said it's not original but it's more than serviceable. Could it be better...sure...but does it hold up well the way it is...yes. It's a good yarn and the movie has an epic feel...that's exactly what I expected. I've seen it in Imax, Real3D and Bluray in 720P ...I've haven't been disappointed in the presentation at all. Yeah I'll be the first to admit I pretty much love all Cameron's work...but I do think people like bashing his movies because of their popularity...just like Titanic.
