I don't understand how you can watch it on anything but imax. The picture gets shrunk when your eyes merge the images together.

i wonder how much the $16 prices are helping the box office because obviously some people are going to be turned off from paying that price no matter how much they want to see the movie. but as long as that percentage is lower than the ticket price percentage increase, i guess it's a benefit. the real box office benefits to being 3-D as far as i can see are repeat viewings and preventing piracy, both of which have to do with not being able to replicate the 3-D experience at home. i mean no matter how much you like something like The Dark Knight, if you can make it to the dvd release, then watching the dvd at home is pretty much the same as seeing it in the theater whereas you have to get your fill of Avatar in all its 3-D splendor right now. and downloading Avatar is largely pointless for the same reason. that would be like downloading a movie with all of the best scenes deleted.

and comparing Avatar to Star Wars? come on. george lucas' horrendous dialogue-writing skills aside, the degree to which you care about the characters and their overall struggle in Star Wars is so much greater than Avatar it isn't funny. we're talking about probably the most well-known and accessible story in all of western pop culture (and not just by star wars geeks) versus a c-grade dances with wolves. just because they both were revolutionary from a technical perspective doesn't mean they were similar in all aspects. the fact that cameron has drawn so many people in despite the weak story is a testament to just how ridiculous the technical achievement is and the fact that cameron is just a better director than lucas.

Imagine Dances with Wolves set on another planet with pteradactyls and floating mountains.

Only time will tell, but it will be interesting to see how the film holds up 10-15 years down the line.

I agree. that mention towards the beginning wasn't really enough to set it all apart. Should have done a little more to establish the men as "contractors."

Of course, you have to account for inflation... but yeah, still pretty damn amazing. And it made an estimated $25.8 mil yesterday, which actually beat out it's first Saturday. Estimates for today are showing a modest 33% drop to $17.2 mil though. Guess it can't keep up this insane pace forever, especially with work and school starting for a lot of people.

I dunno about that. I mean, it features a whole lot of Space marines and the last 1/4 of the movie was all gunfire and explosions. DVD sales will likely get a big boost from all the folks wanting to see the extended lovemaking scene though. lol

technically, it will hold up forever. it's like star wars in the 70's or jurassic park ushering in the "wow, we can make anything look real" special effects age (at least i always point to JP as that moment, other people might have a different movie). in fact, it's probably even a level above either of those and could have a huge impact on IMAX/3D becoming mainstream. there's no doubting it's impact. one only has to look at the staggering box office numbers to see that this is a game changer.

but the story itself? the consensus view certainly seems to be that it was nothing special so i don't see that changing in the future. i'm not saying it sucked, and there were even some emotional moments, but it was basically just a throwaway story meant to show off the visuals. in fact, i actually can't even remember the main character's name right now. so entering the mainstream consciousness the way star wars has done? i just don't see it.

I loved Star Wars, but for me this movie is more epic, sort of on a Lord of the Rings scale.

Just saw this today. I had been very skeptical about the whole 3D fad that movies are experiencing. The movie industry has been through this before (albeit with much worse technology). I didn't (and am not entirely sure I do even now) expect it to last. But man did Avatar do its damndest to change my mind. I can't imagine seeing this movie in any other medium...which could be bad when it hits BluRay and DVD. So much of the splendor that was Pandora might be lost when everything gets smushed down to two dimensions.

But for what is was (and in fairness, what Cameron intended) this movie was a masterpiece. There were several moments when I found myself holding my breath and I rarely do that. Frankly I didn't think this movie would make back its budget based on what I had read that was spent creating it. But it is banking hard right now, despite the less than amazing opening weekend. It's playing long and solid like Titanic did (Cameron has a knack for that, it seems) rather than burning bright and fizzling.

I probably won't get a chance to see this again in theaters before it is gone, but I kind of hope I do. Absolutely amazing.

I don't know, I think the story was far from "throw away" territory. Yeah it's pretty straightforward, but that doesn't stop the film from being a complete movie going experience, at least for me. I wouldn't have gone back two more times if the story and characters were worthless. Certainly Jake Sully and Neytiri and Col Quaritch can't compare to Han and Luke and Leia and Chewie, bu I don't think Star Wars is necessarily on a whole other level compared to Avatar.

I don't know why, but this movie isn't all that great to me. The visuals are spectacular in all, but I feel like I've seen this movie 20 times.

I thought it was okay, but mainly because of the special effects. Take that away, and it's a "meh" kind of movie.

I did wish Stephan Lang's character would have made an inspiring speech before the attack. Why can't bad guys can't make good speeches?

Yeah my reaction too. I think I also expected too much. I dont see how this is an Oscar movie. It was a really good action movie, not much more.

I dont notice the 3D mos of the time. Ive seen 2 movies with it, not that great for me.

It will probably win for Best Director, Visual Effects, and Original Music Score.

I bet they are. I stood in line behind a woman who had already seen it. That's why this will be a huge money maker because of it's broader appeal.

It's disturbing to me that they have sex the same way they connect with animals and trees.

Avatar fans promised alien sex scene on DVD

Fans of Avatar, the record-breaking blockbuster film, are being promised a "blue" alien sex scene when the film comes out on DVD.

    Published: 12:20PM GMT 04 Jan 2010

The sex scene was cut from the cinema version of James Cameron's 3D sci-fi adventure which is close to taking $1 billion (£621m) at the worldwide box office.

It features the giant blue avatar of paraplegic US Marine Jake Sully locking hair with his love interest, Neytiri.

Cameron said: "We had it in [the movie] and we cut it out so that will be something for the special edition DVD – if you want to see how they have sex."

Actress Zoe Saldana, who plays Neytiri, said the sex involves the same process the alien race uses to communicate on its fictional home planet.

In the film, communication takes place by locking hair with flora and fauna, in a process known as "synching."

Saldana said: "If you sync to your banshee and you're syncing to a tree, why not sync into a person?

"It was a very funny scene to shoot because there were so many technical things that sometimes you have to keep in mind that paying attention to all those might disrupt the fluidity of how a scene is supposed to take place."

The actress said the scene was left out originally because the film was aimed at a family audience.
