Oh by the way. Saw 2012. My freaking goodness what a POS!! Even the special FX couldn't save that POS. Almost walk out of the theatre. Michael Bay and Emmerich should take a directing course from Mr Cameron.
Listening to the score gives me an itch to see it again...I may have to watch it on IMAX one last time.
I went with a friend who enjoyed the movie but couldn't get past the "physics" of floating mountains. I was like seriously, you couldn't look past that of all things. These are the kinds of movies where just sit back and enjoy it and don't worry about whether Spoiler daisy cutters would have actually destroyed the tree even if it wasn't right on top of it. Who cares? 9 out of 10.
Latest estimates have Avatar making another $75 million this weekend. What is that, like a 2% dropoff from last week? Unheard of.
Actually I would be curious about the floating mountains. Spoiler My guess is that the unobtainium (that name was one of my groan inducing moments) since it is a natural superconducter the ground and those giant rocks have a strong magnetic field. At some point in the past the floating rocks were once part of the same formation as the ground below and an earthquake shattered the formation but the rocks are held up magnetic repulsion since they have the same charge as the ground below. This would explain why there is a vortex of energy in that region that blinds the sensors. Of course with a strong enough magnetic field to keep mountains floating it would probably rip up the helicopter gunships that fly in there. Also it seems to me that if it interfered with radar it should also interfere with radio communication and the avatar uplink signal. Of course that would make for a boring last battle if neither the helicopters could fly into the region and the avatars quit working. Also I had the same thought about the daisy cutters earlier.
Spoiler It is a 15,000 lb bomb that is so large that it can't be dropped from bombers but is required to be pushed out from cargo planes. It was developed in Vietnam to clear out large sections of jungle and have been used in Iraq and Afghanistan as part of the shock and awe campaign due to the size of explosion they generate. The bomb they use in Avatar isn't an actual daisy cutter but something similar since it is a massive amount of explosives meant to be dropped from the cargo bay of the shuttle.
obviously being christmas weekend helps with the drop-off but that is definitely impressive. $212M domestic and $600+M worldwide already. i'd say that $460M investment is working out quite nicely. also sherlock holmes made $65M (good to see people are liking it because i want to see it) and the chipmunks movie even made $50M. that seems crazy to have three $50M movies in one weekend, especially outside of the summer.
really? factoring in what? worldwide grosses? domestically, dark knight's opening weekend was 158m, which i thought was the biggest weekend.
I think im gonna see it again in IMAX3D tonight. 600+ worldwide already, is that a recond? francis4prez: I believe the actual number it cost was $387M or something around there.
Just saw it. Impressive. Was definitely surprised by how much I like it. The plot wasn't as weak as I expected. The visuals were stunning. Very satisfied with the experience.
Like overall weekend gross. So Dark Knight's weekend including all the other movies was number 1, now with Avatar, Sherlock Holmes, and that Chipmunks movie This weekend is the highest ever.
Avatar's worldwide gross is already up to $617.3M. Cameron's well on pace to have the two highest grossing movies internationally of all time.
It's repeaters like you who could push this movie into the stratosphere, like what happened with Titanic.
