Just got back from it. Like many have said, very strong first half while the second half, while not bad, doesn't live up to the first. Will Smith is one helluva actor. The CGI was average, certainly not up to par with recent films. On a different note, I saw I Am Legend at a normal theater and after The Dark Knight trailer was over, everyone started clapping wildly. Can't wait for that. Spoiler I loved Neville's final stand. It was gripping since Will Smith played the character so well and had you attached, so when you saw him pull out the grenade and charge at the "leader" you just felt his sacrifice.
Just got back from the movie. Will Smith was awesome in the role, and the shots of a "quiet NYC" were well done, but the movie itself was very flat. The pacing was quite uneven, and the creature CGI was downright laughable. And, of course, they raped the book, even going to so far as to change WHY the title of movie is what it is. Oh, well. I'd give it 3 out of 5 stars, mostly for Smith's strong acting.
The CGI was terrible, as others have said, and the last act felt rushed. Spoiler He meets the chick and the kid...the movie gets real slow for about 10 minutes...and then they get attacked. I, for one, thought they were going to run and take cover somewhere else but nope...that's it, that's the final confrontation and there's your movie. The end. Aside from those (huge) aspects, the movie was really strong. The sense of desolation was superbly done and Will Smith played the roll very well. I would definitely recommend this movie, but it's not great. It could have been though...
Exactly how I felt about this movie. The movie almost made you feel what Will Smith's character felt. And like everybody else says, the second half could have been better. Is it just me or did the movie feel like it was 3 hours? When we got out of the theatre only 1 hour and 45 minutes had passed.
Just like everyone said the ending was slow. If Will Smith hadn't played this main role i think it would have been terrible. His acting kept me awake.
Good movie. Great acting as usual by Will Smith. He is easily my favorite actor and it boggles my mind how some people can hate on Will Smith. Sure he looks like a typical action hero, but the dude can flat out act.
Same. I thought it was 3 hours, and it only turned out to be 1:45. I don't know why the hell I didn't think about the fact that he would be talking to himself for most of the movie even though I knew he was the last man on earth going into the movie. Spoiler I thought the end was the best part, I don't know why some thought it was weak. If you thought it was too sad, go watch the Mist Maybe some don't consider that part of the ending...it was in the last 5 mintes.
I thought the funniest part of the movie is when they showed the future gas prices and everyone in the crowd moaned.
I agree with the pacing. Something felt off towards the end. My favorite part: Spoiler I loved the trap they set for him. I had no idea that was about to happen. I also loved it when he fell and spiked himself on yet another trap. I could have done without all the preaching about Bob Marley.
So... I actually had a question on that. Spoiler Did the zombie vampire things set that trap, or was that a trap he set himself? While watching that scene, I assumed that was a trap he set himself and he just freaked out. Guess the vampire zombie things could have done it... but they didn't seem to do much planning. All they really did was smash stuff and kill stuff.
They should've just gone all indy like they did in the first half. Maybe even not shown the mosters at all except in shadow. The special effects looked no better than a Resident Evil game and were a obvious rip off of Chris Cunningham's Aphex Twin video "Come to Daddy."
I think the infected human set it up as well. Smith had just recorded before that scene that he felt that the zombies no longer had any intelligence. He started to freak out since the mannequin was moved and that meant that he was wrong about their intelligence levels. Being a dog owner the scene with Sam affected me the most. I didn't think the movie affected me that much but I found myself kind of hurrying to my house when I was outside at night.
put a spoiler tag in your post.. Spoiler I don't see how the "zombies" could have set it up, if they were so smart why didn't they all attack Neville after the sun went down. Instead of sending out 3 dogs, they could have all just waited for him there. That would have been the end of the movie. I don't buy the whole "zombies can set traps but they can't find ways to cover themselves and go out in the daylight." The movie did not really impress me, it was a little overhyped and I was sorta let down. There should have been more battles between Neville and the monsters, 1 on 1. I gave it a 6 out of 10 on IMDB.
Well... Spoiler They said during the beginning of the movie that the dog's could come out at dusk, but that the human's couldnt until it was night time. And the scene with Sam dying sucked because you knew it was coming, but him strangling his own dog and not being able to look was hard to take. Surprised no one's mentioned the whole religion angle, God vs No-God deal. I thought the movie was good only because of Smith's acting, not necessarily because the plot was awesome.
Awesome movie I thought...Will Smith is an incredible actor and it's amazing how far he's come since Independence Day and his fresh Prince Days. Can you imagine Arnie in this role?! Hell no! The CG didn't really bother me too much cause most of the time they were moving so fast it was hard to get a good glimpse of them. But my only gripes would be like others have mentioned...that the second felt a little rushed. They could have fleshed out the other two character's more, maybe provide more backstory into the doctor's character who created the cure for cancer that turned into the virus (what happened to her?) and more backstory into Neville's character (why was he chosen as the possible savior to the pandemic? how did he discover he was immune?) Spoiler Also, wish they would have examined more of Neville's theory that the monsters were de-evolving and were losing all sense of their humanity...clearly that wasn't the case since they laid the trap on him and went to the peer to find him (meaning they had to have been observing him possibly) and since they was an obvious hierarchy. I honestly would have liked the movie to be even longer...I loved the world they created.
Another little gripe: Spoiler When the dog went running into the dark building after the deer. A. The dog seemed too well trained to do that. B. What killed the deer? A zombie? Did it immediately go to sleep after killing the deer? The shot of the pack of zombies in the corner was great. I just thought it got too quiet too quickly for all of that to happen.
