I was mainly talking about the opportunity to develop the other characters in a movie that is not really advancing the story much. DD
I saw it yesterday and given some of the complaints in this thread, actually enjoyed the movie. To be fair, I've found them all enjoyable, while none to be worthy of Oscar consideration or anything, so really don't care to nitpick. You could, and some of you have, but all in all, it was a great, entertaining flick, and loved the darkness of it. I'd agree with any and all who said the Deathly Hallows story was amazingly well done.
Like who? The movies have always been primarily about the big three. There have been plenty of characters that I would have loved to have been fleshed out in the movies because they were fun in the books but you only have so much time in a movie. I don't see why they would veer from that in this one which of course they did not.
What characters exactly? We know all the players by now, they do not go into any more detail in the books.
Wow. The first two movies of this franchise are easily the weakest. The first movie had the wonderment of this new, magical world working in its favor. But both films definitely target a younger audience. Not so with Azkaban and after. I've read books 3, 5, 6 and 7 and while there are some things that have been omitted, by and large the movies stand very well on their own. Cuaron, Newell and Yates all brought wonderful atmosphere to the films, that were absent in the first two (and I do like the first two, but they can't compare to later films) My wife, who's read the books multiple times, I think said it best. Those people that have problems with the slow pace and the endless camping scenes don't really get the point of it. You have too look for those little details, the nuances and expressions in the characters as the movie progresses. Spoiler The dancing scene was incredibly awkward, but powerful in that it came at a time where the strength and capacity to endure their journey was at it's lowest. Watching a second time, one scene that resonated better with me was right after Ron left, and Hermione left the scarf around the tree, perhaps as a sign to him that they were there, in case he was trying to find his way back. Then after they apparated and reappeared on the rocky hillside, you could see the pain in her face that she knew he'd never be able to find them again; that she may never see him again. That type of stuff should not be overlooked. Could they have made Deathly Hallows into one long 3 hr or so film. Yes, but at the expense of the fans. And I think that's a big reason they split it...for the fans....and of course for the $$$ . But it works. There are so many good moments in this film, small and large. I don't know where I'd rank it, because Azkaban, Goblet, Order and Half Blood are all so strong. But it's near the top.
These movies make me want to weep. I wish they would have done Harry Potter right. The franchise is broken... Thank you Peter Jackson for getting one fantasy series right. Let's pray that HBO does A Game Of Thrones correctly...
What are the biggest flaws in your opinion? I would like to see the view from the eyes of the unsatisfied, because they're clearly big enough fans to care. And I've read each book twice so I consider myself a big fan of the series, but I was completely content with what I've seen. LOTR series I was not satisfied until I saw the extended editions, and I'm still peeved they left out Tom Bombadil.
