For me, it goes: 1) GotG 2a) X-Men: DoFP 2b) Winter Soldier 3) Avengers imo: GotG = most fun Marvel movie, easily the most re-watchable. X-Men: DoFP = most well acted movie of all the Marvel movies. Fassbender and McAvoy kill it as Magneto and Professor X. Winter Soldier = most realistic, most relevant to us. Avengers = best fight / "boss battle" sequence; awesome moments pepper the film throughout.
I'm gonna go ahead and say it. Put me on the 10% of guys who didn't like the movie. Yes it was funny and entertaining. Is that enough to outweigh the negatives? In my book. no. At its core you're looking at a B-level movie with a bunch of B/C actors at the helm. Yes they dressed it up with $100M in special effects, and yes this is usually enough to make a movie "work", even for me. I loved Avengers, I loved Star Trek, I even loved Pacific Rim. But for some reason, all the moving parts in this movie just did not add up to what would amount to an escapist experience. Spoiler I just cringed every time I heard an actor deliver a line horribly, every time I got to a dramatic moment that instead stooped to melodrama, and every time their team got stuck in a bind and needed to be saved by a deus ex machina--which had to be at least 20 times in the movie, Jesus, I mean the tree dude was like a walking deus ex machina. I mean you knew throughout the entire two hours that there was no sense of urgency, of immediacy, because at any time the plot would just pull off this ridiculous twist where something ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE stronger would be waiting in the wings to pop out. In short, the movie didn't work. I could see the actors asking for a do-over. I could see the green screens. I could see the boom mic overhead, the director yelling cut because Danny Bautista is a ****ing horrible actor (if you don't believe me go watch the Man with the Iron Fists, and its juxtaposition to this movie will just absolutely ruin Guardians of the Galaxy for you). There was even a point in the movie where that guy kept going on and on, to the point where I was even saying "SHUT UP" in the movie theatre, and then Zoey Saldana goes "SHUT UP" in the movie. I mean, he has no acting chops so now they have to accommodate him by turning his character into a deadpan guy who doesn't understand a metaphor, and now it's funny? How bout they just cast someone better, even if his muscles are not as bulging. Arnold Schwarzenegger was dumb, but man could he entertain. In the end, Guardians of the Galaxy is a fun lighthearted summer action blockbuster that deserves about a 55% on RT. The movie I would compare it most closely to would be (another Vin Diesel classic) the Chronicles of Riddick, an extremely underrated movie that bests GotG because it has LESS dialogue and knows when to get out of its own way. Avengers and Pacific Rim also did this: "You know what? We've been talking too much. Let's fight." Action movies have their roles, and maybe I'm just getting old but I can't tolerate one that tries to bring drama into the mix. This will be my only post on the movie. Y'all can respond however you like.
I'm sorry but hiring b/c list actors has been Marvel Studios business plan since day one. They work cheap and sign long term deals. Don't forget that before hiring RDJ for Ironman (the first real Marvel Studio Film) he was best remembered for violating his parole by going on a crack bender in a Palm Spring resort whilst wearing a Wonder Woman outfit. And in all fairness all Marvel films could be characterized as dressed up $100 mill + B films. More like really expensive TV episodes but I digress.
I thought the humor in this was generally very forced. Some parts were so lame they broke my immersion into the storyline. (EDIT: I see Spacemoth's post above expands on my feelings as well.) But overall I actually enjoyed it and am looking forward to more. I just hope they learn how to settle down a bit and let the humor be a little less overstated.
Definitely a fun and entertaining movie. Really enjoyed it. I had major doubts about this but they really pulled it off. Once I heard that it was funnier than expected I thought some of the jokes would be too forced but for the most part they blended well. I hope the second t movie dives a little more into the character's background. Flat out entertaining. What I find interesting about the few negative reviews is that they basically say "it's entertaining but".
It was a silly fun movie. I thought it was great because I was not expecting much in terms of a plot or story. I went in asking for it to just be enjoyable, which it was. Movies these days are not very original so its asking a lot for something that will blow you away.
I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'll admit I wasn't interested until I heard all the good reviews. Going in, expectations were low. The comedy was definitely the best aspect of the movie. It also had good moments that made you have the feels. An average number of plot holes that don't really take away much of the enjoyment. The action was very lacking, though. As far as plot, story-telling, and suspense, I thought those were average. I found myself bored with the story in a few scenes, although the humor kept me in. If I had to rank it... 1. Winter Soldier 2. Avengers 3. Iron Man 4. Guardians of the Galaxy
As far as comic book movies go, how does this movie rank? For me it goes: 1. The Dark Knight 2. Guardian Of The Galaxy 3. Iron Man 4. Batman Begins 5. American Splendor 6. Captain America 7. Avengers 8. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles(1990) 9. Sin City 10. Superman II *please note this list is subject to change since I've not seen every comic book based movie ever made.*
Yeah, people who like plot in their sci/fi. Y'all give him a break -- it's just an opinion. He proly saved me $10, so props to him. Dumb movies are best when they avoid a lot of dialogue. (That's why I'm amped for the next MadMax iteration). Glad this one has surpassed expectations in any case.
Says he needs plot in his sci fi...uses Star Trek and Pacific Rim as examples...yeah...about that... Everyone is entitled to their opinion, even if it's stupid. It's your choice to listen to 1 guy who thinks the movie sucked while there's another 30 who say it's great. It wasn't that he didn't like it that made me respond, it's that he made a full page where he contradicts himself about it. Example: What does Bautista's performance in the Man with the Iron Fist have anything to do with his performance in Guardians? The answer you're looking for is nothing, and I've seen each multiple times.
Yes! I am most excited to see this movie next. I loved every single Mad Max movie, each one had its own charm from the slow decadence of #1 to the epic chases in #2 and the memorable one-liners in #3. I think they will do the series justice; only Charlize Theron can f things up. And all y'all can only hope to have a friend as snobby about sci-fi as I am .
I don't agree with that. RDJ had to work his ass off and beg Marvel for the change to play Iron Man. Day 1, Marvel signed Ed Norton. They pursued Will Smith and DiCaprio for Captain America. Johnny Depp for Dr. Strange. They've had Don Cheadle, Ben Kingsley, Gwyneth Paltrow, Natalie Portman, Jeff Bridges, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Idris Elba, Tommy Lee Jones, Benecio Del Toro, Josh Brolin, Robert Redford, Zoe Saldana, Michael Douglas appear in movies. They make pretty smart casting choices. It's not like they can go out and grab Tom Hanks to play She Hulk or something.
Marvel is part of Disney. Disney doesn't go cheap on anything. I was apprehensive about Disney buying Marvel, but it has been an amazing union so far.
I can't rank movies like that. Best I can do is put them in tiers. Here's an attempt: Tier 1 - TDK, Iron Man, Spiderman 2 (Maguire), GotG, First Class, DoFP, TDKR, Winter Soldier, X2, Sin City, Avengers Tier 2 - Iron Man 3, Batman Begins, Watchmen, X-Men, Spiderman (Maguire), Thor, Thor 2, Captain America Tier 3 - Hulk (Norton), Hellboy 1 & 2, Iron Man 2, Wolverine, The Last Stand, Amazing Spiderman (Garfield), V for Vendetta Garbage - Man of Steel, Superman Returns, Wolverine Origins, Fantastic Four 1 & 2, Spiderman 3 (Maguire), Elektra, Daredevil, Hulk (Bana), Green Lantern
You make a good point, RDJ wasn't the RDJ we know today at the time of ironman I don't understand the B level actors argument at all. They paid Bradley cooper to be a raccoon and use a voice that isn't easily recognizable as his own. Vin diesel was hired to be a tree and say 3 words, i know he's hardly De Niro but they could have got anyone for that. They got Glenn Close and Benicio del toro to play relatively smaller roles.
